Painesville: State trooper hits downed power pole

PAINESVILLE, Ohio -- A state trooper's cruiser was disabled when it hit a highway light pole that fell in the roadway on State Route 2 in Painesville overnight.

The accident was reported before 3 a.m. near the Richmond Street exit in the eastbound lanes of the highway.

A trooper was headed east on S.R. 2 in high winds and sleet when he saw a disabled car on the right side of the road.

As he moved over to check on the vehicle and any possible occupants, he struck the downed pole, deflating three tires on his cruiser.

The trooper blocked the right lane.

The first car also sustained damage from the downed pole.

Other traffic ran over the pole in the meantime, but drove over a more flat portion in the left lane and their cars were unharmed.

S.R. 2 east was closed from the Richmond Street exit to the on-ramp for a few hours overnight and reopened close to 4:30 a.m.

Painesville Police are investigating the first car's accident.

The trooper's cruiser was towed back to the post.

Nobody was injured, according to highway patrol.

Cleveland Weather: Taking the plunge

A powerful storm system continues to pummel the eastern half of the country with severe weather in the Southeast and severe winter weather in the Midwest.

Tonight, a strong cold front swept across the area.  Rain showers, gusty wind, and dropping temperatures were the rule of the evening.  For example, the Downtown Cleveland temperature fell from 54 to 39 in an hour and a half (9PM to 10:30PM).

Winds will remain "blustery" tonight, and a wind advisory has been issued for much of northern Ohio through 7AM.

As the cold air comes sweeping in on westerly wind, Lake Erie will once again be the focus of the forecast.  With the west wind, we will likely have one "mega band" of lake effect set up, along with a few other smaller bands.  Where the "mega band" sits, we will have the highest snow accumulations...8"+ easily attained while 12+" will be possible.  We'll just have to see where the bands set up...the most likely place would be the snowbelts, which are under a lake snow warning.

(Lake Effect Snow Warning for Cuyahoga, Lake, Geauga, and Ashtabula counties)

While there are many factors that play in to a lake effect forecast, wind direction and fetch (air duration over water) are two of the most important.  That west wind gives us the best fetch (the wind has to travel over a great distance of water) and therefore we can get some serious snow bands going.

Winds will change around on Friday to help the lake effect taper off, but the winds of change are coming ahead of a clipper system that will bring a widespread, light snowfall (1" to 3" to the area).

We'll have a little lake effect on Sunday, but then another clipper moves through on Monday.

Oy!  If it isn't one thing, it is another.

Hang on friends, it is going to be a crazy ride.

Thursday: Lake effect snow east.  Mostly cloudy with flurry chances otherwise.  Colder and windy.  Temps start near 50 just after midnight, then fall into the 40s...30s and into the 20s to start the day.  (Lake Effect Snow Warning for Cuyahoga, Lake, Geauga, and Ashtabula counties)

Friday:  Mostly cloudy with a chance for lake effect, especially early.  COLD and breezy.  Near 20  (Lake Effect Snow Warning for Cuyahoga, Lake Geauga and Ashtabula counties)

Saturday:  Mostly cloudy with periods of snow likely (weak Clipper system #1).  1" to 3" of snow accumulation possible.  Mid 20s

Sunday:  Mostly cloudy with a slight chance for lake effect snow showers.  Upper 20s

Monday:  Mostly cloudy with scattered snow showers (Clipper #2 which will bring additional light accumulations).  Low 30s

Tuesday:  Mostly cloudy with scattered lake effect flurries.  Upper 20s/near 30

Wednesday:  Partly sunny.  Low 30s

Top 4 Super Bowl TV Deals (46" to 70")

CLEVELAND -- Yesterday on Ways 2 Save, it was all about TVs 22 inches to 43 inches.

Today, we crank up the savings and the screen size.

I've been hunting deals around the clocking, checking local store stock and combing every cheap avenue out there. It's clear you want quality and you want size. A huge thank you to Deal Angels Julia, Rachel and Ada who have helped me narrow down a list of hundreds of deals.

Beginning next month, TV prices go up and deals are scarce. Also, as stores deplete their older LCD stock with the new LED models, we'll see fewer deals.

This also marks the end of the 2012 stock because the 2013 models start to make their way to our stores soon. You won't hear me mentioning too many TV deals between now and October!

Top Super Bowl TV Deals

CLEVELAND -- First off, I'll have deals on TVs larger than 43 inches tomorrow. Today, I'm only doing 32 to 43 inches as prices are hottest on these sizes today.

The countdown to the big day is on and super-sized football often spells super-sized TV discounts. Traditionally, "Big Game" TV deals were so folks could get a big TV in time for the Super Bowl to enjoy the game on. Beginning next month, TV prices go up and deals are scarce. Also, as stores deplete their LCD stock with the new LED models, we'll see fewer deals.

Cleveland: Overnight fire closes West Side Market

CLEVELAND -- A brief fire at the West Side Market left the historic building filled with billows of smoke early Wednesday morning.

An overnight security guard reported the fire at Sebastian's Meats inside the market before 2:30 a.m. Crews quickly controlled the fire, containing it to the one stand, but a fire official says the building sustained heavy smoke damage.

It could take hours for the smoke inside the building to clear out and for fire crews to finish their work at the scene. The fire department is bringing in special fans in an effort to vent the smoke trapped in the ceiling.

City of Cleveland officials say the West Side Market will be closed today.

Boy Scouts may soon welcome gay scouts, leaders

As early as next week, the Boy Scouts of America's may announce it will allow gay scouts and troop leaders, a spokesman for the group has told USA TODAY.

If this policy shift is approved by the national board meeting at their scheduled meeting next week, it will be a sharp reversal of the Scouts' decade's old national policy banning homosexuals.

"The policy change under discussion would allow the religious, civic, or educational organizations that oversee and deliver Scouting to determine how to address this issue," BSA spokesman Deron Smith said in a statement to USA TODAY.

Only seven months ago, the Boy Scouts affirmed that policy after a nearly two-year examination of the issue by a committee of volunteers convened by national leaders of the Boy Scouts of America, known as the BSA. However, local chapters and some members of the national board -- corporate CEO Randall Stephenson of AT&T and James Turley of Ernst & Young -- called for a reconsideration.

The proposed new policy would leave decisions on membership and leadership up to the BSA' s 290 local governing councils and 116,000 sponsoring religious and civic groups.

"Scouting has always been in an ongoing dialogue with the Scouting family to determine what is in the best interest of the organization and the young people we serve," Smith told USA TODAY.

"The Boy Scouts would not, under any circumstances, dictate a position to units, members or parents. Under this proposed policy, the BSA would not require any chartered organization to act in ways inconsistent with that organization's mission, principles or religious beliefs," he said.

The Cleveland United Way Chapter was one of 50 nationwide which stopped funding because of the discrimination policy.

That move was controversial for them, as well, says United Way Executive Director, Bill Kitson.

"We received letters and phone calls on both sides of the issue. We obviously received folks who said that they would no longer support us. And we received new donors who said they're now supporting us because we made this change," says Kitson.

Protesters: Chase suspects' autopsy results are character defamation

EAST CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Protestors marched in East Cleveland Monday night, making claims that Cleveland Police are trying to discredit the two people killed in a high speed chase in November.

Ohio Attorney General Mike Dewine said early on that no information would be released until the investigation was complete.

The results of the attorney general's investigation are expected this week.

At a time when the Cleveland community is tapping it's foot in anticipation of a gunshot residue test, which might clear suspects Malissa williams and Timothy Russell, the suspect's drug tests have been released instead.

Family members and community activists are outraged.

Two months of simmering has brought a boil to the anger felt by community activists and family members of Williams and Russell.

"They killed my daughter, said Martha Williams, Malissa's mother. "I want to know why. I don't care what they say drugs in her system. That's irrelevant."

Last Friday, the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner released autopsy results, which indicated that both Russell and Williams tested positive for cocaine. Williams also had marijuana in her system.

The information was actually released to actually assassinate their credibility -- that's all it was," said Walter Jackson, Malissa's uncle.

Not included in the autopsy was whether the two had any gunshot residue on them, which would prove whether either of the suspects fired on Cleveland Police. According to police, the alleged shots are what started last November's chase.

The chase ended with 13 officers firing 137 bullets, hitting Williams and Russell more then 20 times each.

The crowd Monday night repeatedly chanted the phrase, "No gun residue."

Two simultaneous investigations are underway. Attorney General Dewine's office is investigating the criminal case.

The City of Cleveland is investigating whether police policy was breached.

"We will do this in a transparent, honest and credible way," said Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson.

Onlookers aren't convinced. Elected officials are now facing the same scrutiny as police.

Another recurring chant from the rally: "No truth, no justice."

The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office says it is not acting on behalf of attorney general. The autopsy was released at the request of the media. It is standard practice for the medical examiner to release public information when requested.

Euclid: Firefighter injured in apartment fire

Written By kolimtiga on Senin, 28 Januari 2013 | 17.04

EUCLID -- A firefighter was injured while battling a fire at a Euclid Avenue apartment complex Sunday evening.

The fire started just after 5:00 p.m. on the second floor in the rear of the building.

Fire departments from adjacent cities were called to assist with the blaze at Aljer Manor Apartments. Police were also called to assist with traffic control. They say the area of Euclid Avenue and Heritage Drive was closed.

An eyewitness said smoke could be seen coming from the building before fire crews arrived.

According to Fire Chief Tom Cosgriff, the fire started on the second floor and quickly spread to adjacent apartments.

One firefighter received a minor injury while working at the scene. That firefighter received treatment and was transported to the hospital.

The building owner says there are 11 units in the building that house roughly 20-30 people total.

During the fire, Illuminating company workers had to cut power to the building. Other buildings in the complex still have power.

The American Red Cross is on scene to assist residents who were displaced.

No residents were injured.

EUCLID -- A firefighter was injured while battling a fire at a Euclid Avenue apartment complex Sunday evening.

Cleveland Weather: Showing improvement

Written By kolimtiga on Sabtu, 26 Januari 2013 | 17.04

Today's clipper system brought enough snow to make a mess in northern Ohio, but wasn't bad enough to cause major problems.

The good news is the clipper is moving out this evening, but some lake effect snow showers will be around tonight.

Snowbelt areas could have another couple inches of snow tonight and early tomorrow.

As for the rest of the area, mostly cloudy skies will prevail through early Saturday, then we will get to see some sun peeks.

Sunday looks lovely.

Sunday night a southern storm system will move our way, but will also bring warming temperatures to us.  In the time that the rain moves in and the well-above freezing temperatures get here, we will have the potential for an icy mix Sunday night and early Monday that will go from snow to sleet  to freezing rain and ultimately rain.

The timing of the icy mix changing to rain all depends on how quickly the warm air advances.  This will be monitored through the weekend.

Heavy rain is still in the forecast for later on Monday through Tuesday and into Wednesday.  This could mean flooding in the area.

The cold air returns later next week and so will the chances for lake effect.

Tonight:  Mostly cloudy with scattered lake effect snow.  Accumulations in snow belt areas should remain light, only a couple of inches.  Temps in the middle teens

Saturday:  Early lake effect lingers into the afternoon east, otherwise mostly cloudy to partly sunny skies.  Mid 20s

Sunday:  Partly sunny.  Near 30

Monday:  Icy mix to start, then rain.  Rain could be heavy at times later in the day.  Upper 30s

Tuesday:  Rain.  Rain could be heavy at times.  Breezy.  Low/mid 50s (WOW!!!)

Wednesday:  Rain likely, which could change to snow late day as temperatures drop.  (A strong cold front will come through Wednesday or Wednesday night).  Windy.  40s (falling into the 30s late)

Thursday:  Mostly cloudy with scattered lake effect snow.  Much colder.  Breezy.  Upper 20s

Friday:  Mostly cloudy with scattered lake effect snow.  Low 20s

Bedford: Crews recover man's body in Metroparks

BEDFORD -- Crews have recovered a man's body at the Cleveland Metroparks Bedford Reservation, according to the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office.

Police confirm to Channel 3 that a rescue was underway after a man fell down a steep embankment.

Early Friday evening, a Cleveland Metroparks ranger received a call about a man who had fallen off a cliff.

A passerby noticed a "disturbance" in the snow and branches and alerted authorities.

It appears the man had been walking along a bridle trail at the time he fell down a cliff into a ravine.

The man has been indenitified as Randy Prosen of Northfield.

It is unknown how long Prosen may have been down there before he was discovered.

There doesn't appear to be any foul play.

New U.S. ruling gives all athletes a fair shot

BEREA -- Fifteen-year-old Casey Followay has never let his disability stop him. A birth defect caused paralysis in his legs.

The only hurdle he has run into is the word "no."

Casey started wheelchair racing when he was 8. He trains 90 minutes a day.

He earned a spot on his high school track team but he can't compete with able-footed runners. Instead, he has to run by himself.

But that will now change.

On Friday, the U.S. Department of Education ruled disabled athletes must be given a fair chance to compete with other athletes as long as they don't get an advantage.

Casey will compete in the 100, 400 and 800 meters.

He may not win those races, but Friday's victory will give him a chance.

Friday's ruling could have the same impact as Title IX did 40 years ago, which allowed women and girls the same chance at sports as the boys.

Athletes in individual sports like track, wrestling and swimming will compete together. Other sports, like basketball and sled hockey, must have teams formed for those who want to play.

Cleveland Police: Man arrested in connection with teen kidnap

CLEVELAND -- A 16-year-old girl has been rescued by police after she says she was abducted from Lorain Avenue and held for days in an abandoned house.

Police were contacted by the girl's mother who had received a call from her daughter saying she was in an abandoned house in an unknown location.

Police talked to the teen and gave officers a house number that was visible across the street from the upstairs window in the room where she was being held.

Officers sent cruisers into the area, searching abandoned houses. The teen was able to let the police know when she could see one of the cruisers in the street below. Police then went to the house on West 94th Street and rescued the girl.

Once in the care of officers, the girl told police that she had been forced into a car on Jan. 16 while she walked down Lorain Avenue.

The girl told police that the morning of her rescue, on Jan. 18, the man who had grabbed her had been at the house and told her he was taking her out of town that night so no one could find her.

Police say Antonio Davis, 30, was taken into custody at an address on Wakefield Avenue. Police say the teen positively identified him.

Davis faces charges including kidnapping and rape.

Rocky River: Man wanted in fatal shooting turns himself in

ROCKY RIVER -- Police say a man being sought on a warrant in connection with a double shooting that left one man dead has surrendered to police.

Police confirm that Donovan Owens, 21, turned himself in just after 6:40 p.m. with his lawyer.

Michael MacGillis, of Rocky River, was shot Tuesday night as he and a friend walked along Westway Drive by Wagar Road and Interstate 90.

MacGillis died after being fatally shot. His companion, 43-year-old Andrew Geraci, was wounded three times and is recovering at MetroHealth Medical Center. He's talking with police.

Police are being told the two men were walking when they had words with men in a passing car that led to gunfire.

Police found the suspect's car in Cleveland.

This is the first murder in Rocky River since 1998. That was a triple-murder involved domestic violence.

Police say that Tuesday's shooting was an apparent falling out among criminals.

Earlier on Thursday the police chief commented on this first homicide in more than a decade.

"There is not a magic bubble over the city of Rocky River. We are susceptible to crime like any other community. It happened here. It will happen somewhere else tomorrow," said Chief Stillman.

But he's also offering this reassurance to residents.

"Everyone in Rocky River should feel safe."

Records show Owens was convicted in December, 2009 for robbery and abduction. He was sentenced to three years in prison and released last July to three years of supervision.

Cav's Tristan Thompson visits Cleveland Clinic

CLEVELAND --  Tristan Thompson has a reason for wanting to visit the Cleveland Clinic Epilepsy Unit.  It's a condition that's near to his heart because his six-year-old brother suffers from the condition.

Thompson also understands the struggles families face to pay for treatment, because before he went Pro it was difficult for his own family. "It costs a lot, medicine, seeing doctors tests so I want to raise awareness and money to help those that are not fortunate enough to help pay for it," Thompson says.

21-year-old Taylor Nuss of South Russell was one of dozens of patients Thompson visited.  She had surgery Tuesday, called Stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG).  It's a surgical procedure that is used to identify areas of the brain where epileptic seizures originate.

During SEEG, doctors place tiny electrodes in targeted brain areas, which are then monitored to precisely locate the seizure source. This is typically used for complex cases, when the origin of the seizures isn't known.

The surgeon uses sophisticated brain mapping to determine the placement of the electrodes in the brain and a robot helps guide the placement. This technique can also better pinpoint where the seizures are coming from, so doctors can remove less brain matter. But they have to determine the best area to implant those electrodes.

That's why they're studying a new method using EEG and Functional MRIs to look at brain regions involved at the time of seizures. "It gives us a very nice picture in a three dimensional view of where exactly the epileptic siezures are coming from," says Dr. Imad Najm, Director of the Cleveland Clinic's Epilepsy Center.

Using both EEG and fMRI at the same time allows researchers to measure th blood oxygen levels in specific brain regions and correlate them with spikes in activity. Once they pinpoint the right spot of the brain where the seizures are located, and if it's operable, they'll remove that section of brain and hopefully alleviate the seizures.

So Taylor is literally wired up and waiting to have a seizure for the procedure to work.  So getting a chance to say hello to a Cleveland Cavalier was a nice break. As for Thompson, he was happy to see where his brother may stay when he comes to Cleveland. "I'm living in Cleveland so it's not bad to have mom come down and have some home cooked meals," Thompson says.

On Monday, Ohio National Guard Private Justin Cisar will say goodbye to his wife and one month-old daughter, when he is deployed to Afghanistan. Wednesday night, Pvt. Cisar, and about 100 other solders headed overseas, were the guests of honor at a sendoff by the Lorain Veteran's Council.

The servicemen were treated to a big dinner, fellowship and lots of thank yous. The family members they'll leave behind told us tonight was special.

Don Attie helped put this event together. He's a Vietnam veteran and didn't get a goodbye like this.

Sergeant Michael Wilson is 22 years old, has two kids and one on the way. It will be his first deployment to Afghanistan.

The soldiers expect to return home one year from now.

The public is invited to a community "Soldiers Call To Duty" ceremony Friday at 10 a.m. at the Lorain Community College in Elyria.

Black Tuesday Sale: Laptops, TVs, North Face

CLEVELAND -- I was tipped off about this sale two weeks ago and to be honest, I wasn't sure what to expect. I was told the major retail players who postponed their post-Christmas sales had today labeled as the the day to drop prices. Over the past 12 hours, prices started to drop across the board.

A huge thank you to Deal Angels Julia, Rachel and Ada for jumping in to assist overnight, helping me comb through hundreds of deals and for the insider information. Below is the Top 10 list of "Black Tuesday" deals in the country.

Please keep in mind that despite a ton of stock, that will change over the course of today. Merchants may also raise prices once sale stock sells out.

LAKE COUNTY, Ohio -- Dozens of truck drivers filled up the rest stops along Interstate 90 Monday evening, as lake effect snow blanketed roadways.

ODOT dispatched 76 plow trucks in Lake, Geauga and Cuyahoga Counties. When the temperature drops below 20 degrees, salt alone is not sufficient, so crews mix in a liquid brine.

Most traffic reduced to under 40 miles per hour, but some truck drivers said it wasn't enough.

Many semi drivers opted to pull off the road early and wait until morning.

Like plow trucks, semis need extra room to stop in icy conditions.

A huge thank you to Deal Angels Julia, Rachel and Ada for jumping in to assist overnight, combing through hundreds of deals and for the insider information. Below is the Top 10 list of "Black Tuesday" deals in the country.

Please keep in mind that despite a ton of stock, that will change over the course of today. Merchants may also raise prices once sale stock sells out.

Ohioans to play a role in inauguration events

CLEVELAND -- A handful of Ohioans will be front and center for President Barack Obama's inauguration.

Toledo autoworker Kenyetta Jones is one of eight "citizen co-chairs" who've been selected to highlight Obama's first-term accomplishments.

Jones spoke at last year's Democratic National Convention about Obama's work to bailout the auto industry.

She'll ride on an inaugural parade float after Obama's swearing-in Monday.

The Miami University Marching Band will be in the parade too.

And the former band director at Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School near Cleveland wrote musical arrangements for the inauguration.

Ryan Nowlin is an arranger in the U.S. Marine Band. He created the score that the band will play as it accompanies Kelly Clarkson and Beyonce at the swearing-in ceremony.
