See The Possible: Public housing program helps teens succeed

Written By kolimtiga on Senin, 29 April 2013 | 17.05

CLEVELAND -- The dream of going to college isn't always an easy dream to achieve.

And when you grow up in public housing, that dream can be an even bigger challenge.

That's why the Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority has a program to mentor teens and show them what's possible.

The Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority, or CMHA, calls the program GS:Tag, which stands for Generation Success: Teens Achieving Greatness.

It focuses on leadership skills and education.

This program is more than teaching teens; it's about giving them the tools to become leaders and then to turn around and help others.

Patrick Parker grew up in CMHA public housing, but dreams of a life beyond his neighborhood.

"I just always wanted something better for myself, my mom, and my siblings," Parker said.

At 17 years old, Patrick Parker isn't afraid to dream big.

Parker says he wants to go to college, "[to] become an electrical engineer and maybe move to California."

Parker's mother, Elzera Hill, calls her home a safe haven away from drugs and violence. A life, she says, is just beyond their front door.

Hill says she keeps a strict, but positive household. She's hung inspirational sayings and blessings throughout the house.

For Parker, her eldest, she says, "I think about his kindergarten diploma and now I have his high school diploma."

And eventually, a college diploma. The first in the family.

Parker credits his mother's tough love for inspiring him to sign up for a public housing mentor program.

"It keeps you out of trouble," Parker explains. "It makes me notice things and really take chances and take opportunity of chances I have."

And you become a GS:Tag member for life.

Lynell Ogletree, now a college freshman, is Parker's mentor.

Ogletree says GS:Tag focused him, allowing him to see his own potential.

"People don't know what they want to do. They just want that extra push. GS:Tag was that extra push," Ogletree said.

Ogletree also grew up in public housing and will be the first in his family to graduate from a four-year college.

At first, Parker says he wasn't interested in getting to know Ogletree, but as soon as they started talking about their lives, they connected.

"You meet someone so fast and they influence you so much and I talked to him on the phone and he was like 'college is good,' Parker shared. "He's a good role model too."

Ogletree says having faced the same hurdles, the same temptations that Parker is now facing, he wanted to help.

"I was going to reach him no matter what, and college was going to play a key role in that," Ogletree said.

For Ogletree, his dream is to be a U.S. Marshall here in Cleveland.

He, like Parker, credits GS:Tag, and his mother, for keeping him on the right track.

"It makes me feel proud of him to know that even with the distractions that we had coming up, that he had coming up, he didn't allow that to distract him," said Janich Mitchell, Ogletree's mother.

For both these teens and their families, they're looking to the future.

And what a bright one it is.

Restraining order hearing expected in Pilot Flying J investigation

KNOXVILLE -- A court hearing is expected Monday morning involving Browns owner Jimmy Haslam amid the Pilot Flying J investigation.

According to WBIR, our affiliate in Knoxville, a restraining order hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m.

Last week, a Georgia trucking filed a motion for a temporary restraining order against Haslam.

The company wants him to stop contacting potential victims of the alleged rebate scheme involving Pilot Flying J, claiming Haslam is asking customers to sign releases -- giving up their rights to sue.

We're also learning more about what the government claims Browns owner Jimmy Haslam's Pilot Flying J company did to warrant a federal investigation.

The Associated Press says Haslam's team was secretly recorded on how they scammed hundreds of thousands of dollars from clients.

Investigators gave immunity to one former Pilot Flying J employee who laid out how the alleged scheme worked.

If a client questioned the mistake, the report says they were told to blame it on a computer glitch.

Court documents allege Haslam was aware of the rebate situation.

Sheriff: Bodies in Lake Erie appear to be missing kayakers

MARBLEHEAD --  The Erie County Sheriff's Office says it appears two bodies pulled from Lake Erie today are those of a father and daughter last seen kayaking earlier this month.

The coroner will have to perform tests to positively identify the remains.

The man's body was pulled from the lake Friday afternoon near the Cedar Point breakwall.  The girl's body was found mid-morning about six miles offshore from the City of Huron.

Petty Officer Lauren Laughlin says the Coast Guard station at Marblehead was called at 11 a.m. and located the girl's body. It was brought ashore at the Shelby Street Pier.

Deputy Chief Jared Oliver with the Erie County Sheriff's Department says they believe the body is that of 12 year old Viola Francis based on clothing and jewelry on the body.

Viola and her father Jonathan were last seen when they went kayaking in Sandusky Bay on April 6.   The kayaks washed ashore in Ottawa County the next day.  The two did not have life jackets.

The Erie County Coroner says that early indication on the cause of death is drowning with secondary hypothermia.

Strongsville: Tentative agreement in teachers strike; vote Saturday

STRONGSVILLE -- It appears that after 8 weeks, the Strongsville Education Association and the Board of Education have reached a tentative agreement.

Members of the SEA and the BOE began talking with a mediator around 1 p.m. Friday afternoon.

The Strongsville Board of Education will not release any details of the settlement until both sides ratify the agreement.

"The past eight weeks have been difficult, but the healing process begins today," said David Frazee, BOE president.

"We want to thank the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service regional office in Independence for their efforts. We also appreciate the work of the negotiation teams."

Tracy Linscott, President of the Strongsville Education Association, says the past few weeks have been hard, but they went into today's meeting hopeful.

Linscott tells Channel 3's Jennifer Lindgren that they even though the tentative deal still has to be ratified, they would not be going back to their members for a vote if they didn't think it would pass.

They will vote on the tentative agreement Saturday afternoon.

She says details still have to be worked out regarding when the teachers will return to the classroom, but says that could come as early as Monday morning.

Haslams try to halt fallout from FBI raid on Pilot

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Haslam family of Tennessee is trying to control the damage after a federal investigation into its multibillion-dollar travel center business.

The family has built wealth and influence that spans business, sports and politics in the state and beyond.

Jimmy Haslam, the CEO of Pilot Flying J, also owns the NFL's Cleveland Browns. His brother Bill is the governor of Tennessee. Their father played on the University of Tennessee's national championship team in 1951 and founded what is the sixth-largest privately held company in the country.

An affidavit released after a raid last week claims sales employees withheld rebates owed to trucking firms so they could boost profits and pad their commissions.

Jimmy Haslam says he has ordered audits and suspensions and personally reached out to customers who were insulted in secret recordings.

Crews dismantle tavern wall in search for Jimmy Hoffa

OLD BROOKLYN -- The mystery of Jimmy Hoffa's disappearance has captivated many for the past 38 years. Is there a chance the former Teamsters boss has been buried in Cleveland all this time?

Over the years there have been frequent searches for Hoffa including one as recent as last fall in the Detroit area.

Today the search turned to the site of Wexler's Tavern on State Road in Cleveland's Old Brooklyn neighborhood where the new owner and now possibly the FBI may be interested.

In the tavern's basement, a wall is being dismantled in an effort to determine if this was Hoffa's final resting place.

With every swing of the sledgehammer, Doug Graziano hopes he is getting closer to solving the mystery. "This is the claim and if its Hoffa that would be right on," said Graziano.

Wexler's previous owner, Lou Gentile, and his then business partner found bones wrapped in red-butcher paper inside the wall 25 years ago when they were renovating the tavern.  The bones were neatly wrapped in seven football-shaped packages.  Gentile says he called police but officers instructed him to throw the bones away.

"I'm thinking, wow. These are human bones. And then all the history of the tavern came flooding back, that there was a connection with Jimmy Hoffa, and the people who were around the tavern at the time," Gentile said.

When Doug Graziano, the new owner heard the story he was intrigued. He was even more fascinated when while cutting out a panel in the wall he found a a matchbook from the Palm Desert Lodge in California. The lodge was dubbed  "the house Jimmy Hoffa and the Teamsters built."

During Wednesday's search, 11 bone fragments were found. Cleveland police officers arrived at the tavern late Wednesday night, and transported the bones to the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office, where it will be determined whether the bones are of human origin.

Jimmy Hoffa disappeared in 1975.

Dave Neale, Sr. owned the tavern, then known as Hillcrest Tavern, during the 1970's. Neale passed away in 2009, but his son, Dave, Jr. says he never knew of any connection between his father's tavern and Hoffa.

When asked what he thought his father would have thought about the intrigue over the newly discovered bones, Neale said, "He'd probably be laughing about it right about now."

"But it gave me a chance to think about him today. It really did," he said as he smiled.

Akron: 7-year-old hospitalized after dog attack

Written By kolimtiga on Rabu, 24 April 2013 | 17.04

AKRON, Ohio -- A 7-year-old girl is hospitalized at Akron Children's Hospital, after a dog attack Tuesday evening.

Around 7 p.m., Ah-Jia Lollis was riding her pink scooter down Welsh Avenue when witnesses say a neighbor's dog attacked her.

Lollis was bitten on her ear, shoulder, chest and stomach. She was rushed to Akron Children's Hospital where she will have to undergo surgery.

The dog, identified as a rottweiler, was contained after the attack.

Lollis' mother, Kimberly, emotionally recalled the moments when she found out her daughter was in trouble.

"My son came in and said, 'Mom the dog is eating my sister!' I took off running outside and by the time I got there, the dog had my baby by the back of her hair, biting her neck, her ear, her chest, her stomach. I had to pull my child out of this dog's mouth," said Kimberly Lollis.

The mother and child ran indoors and called 911.

The city has a leash law, requiring dogs to be kept on leashes or in control when off their property.

Witnesses say they are familiar with the dog involved, but have always seen it on a leash or inside a fence.

"If you have a dog, little or big, you are responsible for your dog.  A little mistake like not latching a door can cost an innocent child her life," said Lollis.

Lollis says doctors told her that her daughter will recover, but the healing process may be lengthy.

Police and animal control officers are investigating the incident.

Stay with Channel 3 News for updates on the investigation.

Cleveland Weather: Weather tease

April can be such a tease.

After the doldrums of the typical March chill, April's peeks at warmer weather can certainly do a lot to perk up spirits ... until the next front blasts through.

Yet another strong cold front will be coming through tomorrow morning.  This means temperatures will be in the 50s in the morning, but will quickly fall into the 40s for much of the day.

A chance like that doesn't come easily, so rain (and even some rumbles) will be with us as well.

Don't worry... since it is April, the change back to warmer weather will be following quickly.

Tonight:  Clouding up with rain moving in.  Rumbles of thunder possible.  50s

Wednesday: Rain showers. Windy.  50s early, falling into the low 40s by late morning and staying cool for the rest of the day.

Thursday: Partly sunny with scattered showers. Low 50s

Friday: Mostly sunny. Upper 50s/low 60s

Saturday: Partly sunny.  Low 60s

Sunday: Mostly cloudy with a chance of rain showers.  Mid 60s

Monday: Partly sunny to mostly cloudy with isolated showers.  Upper 60s

Tuesday:  Partly sunny.  Near 70

Akron: 7-year-old hospitalized after dog attack

Cleveland: Local tavern plans to dig for Jimmy Hoffa's remains

CLEVELAND -- It's been 25 years, but Lou Gentile still wonders what he really found inside the walls of Wexler's Tavern on State Road, in the Old Brooklyn neighborhood.

Could the remains of Jimmy Hoffa be buried at the bar?

In 1988, while he and his business partner were stringing electrical cable behind the walls to the basement, they made a startling discovery: Seven football-sized packages, neatly wrapped in red butcher paper.

"I took the flashlight and shined it down on the first package that he [my partner] had cut open, and there was a hand," recalled Gentile. "In another one, there was part of a spinal column."

"I'm thinking, wow. These are human bones. And then all the history of the tavern came flooding back, that there was a connection with Jimmy Hoffa, and the people who were around the tavern at the time," he said.

Could the bones be that of the Teamster leader who disappeared in 1975? Hoffa's body has never been found and the mystery has led to several futile digs, including one as recently as September 2012 in a Detroit-area backyard.

Gentile's imagination went wild.

"I'm thinking, if these are Hoffa's bones, we're going to be rich!" recalled Gentile, excited about the discovery.

He says he called Cleveland Police and two officers arrived at the tavern.

They were not as impressed with the find, says Gentile.

He claims one officer pointed out that if tests revealed that the bones were human bones, the tavern would become a crime scene. Walls would be torn down. The tavern would lose thousands dollars' worth of renovations.

Gentile says he was deflated.

He recalled the officer advising him, "Get whatever else is up there in the wall out, and sweep all of that stuff out, and throw it away."

So Gentile disposed of the bones in the trash. Asked whether he was worried about whether he was disrupting a crime scene, Gentile says he was acting on the advice of police. Also, he says, at the time no one knew for certain that the bones were human.

He believes both of the officers have since passed away.

Gentile never publicly shared his story until now, after the current tavern owner decided to cut into the old wall to see if there were any other bones left.

Last month, while cutting a panel out of the wall, owner Doug Graziano says something fell out of the wall: An old matchbook from the Palm Desert Lodge in California.

"I did a search on the Internet and ironically it [the hotel website] said, 'The house that Jimmy Hoffa and the Teamsters built.' Unbelievable!"

So now, Graziano plans to further tear down the wall Wednesday morning, hoping to find more bones that might be left behind.

He knows that skeptics might scoff at the notion of Hoffa's remains being buried at the tavern. He denies that it's all a publicity stunt.

But Graziano is determined to find out if his tavern holds the secrets to Hoffa's disappearance.

A tavern in Old Brooklyn, of all places.

"In Old Brooklyn. Amazing," he said.

Cleveland Council OKs transfer of lakefront parks to Metroparks

Written By kolimtiga on Selasa, 23 April 2013 | 17.04

CLEVELAND -- Improvements may be coming this June to six parks along Lake Erie.

Monday night, Cleveland City Council approved the transfer of the parks from the care of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources to Cleveland Metroparks.

Metroparks will make a decision on the transfer sometime in the next couple of weeks.

The state parks up for transfer include: Edgewater Park, East 55th Marina, Gordon Park, Euclid Beach Park, Villa Angela Park and Wildwood Park.

Ward 11 City Councilman Mike Polensek has pushed for the transfer for the last few years.

State support for the six parks is on the decline; Polensek says, ODNR is about $20 million behind in maintenance on the parks.

Polensek thinks Metroparks will do a better job of upkeep and of making the parks more open and inviting to the public.

"They're an outstanding institution. Everything they touch, they improve," Polensek said of the Metroparks.

The acquisition would also extend the "Emerald Necklace," as the Metroparks are known, up to the shores of Lake Erie.

Initial improvements proposed by the council would include fishing platforms, as well as breakwall and shore protection, beach nourishment and redesign, pavement, rehab of bathroom facilities and pedestrian bridges.

Some of the money to fix up the parks would be passed from the state to the Metroparks.

People who frequent the state lakefront parks are excited at the prospect that they may become a part of the Metroparks.

"I personally think Metroparks would do a better job," said Eddie Petway, walking his dog at Edgewater Park.

"I think it would be good for improving the place and making it more family friendly and kid-safe," said Mia Ambry, with her family at Euclid Beach Park on Monday.

MORE: Cleveland: Five hospitalized after late night crash

A car traveling at high speeds pulled over near the scene where officers were investigating the earlier crash. Police took cover as the car quickly slowed to a stop, a police source said.

The people inside the car approached police saying their friend had been shot by people inside of another car. The witnesses told officers that people inside another car fired the shots and sped away.

Five gunshot holes were found on the passenger side of the car.

Strongsville Strike: No deal, teachers return to picket line

INDEPENDENCE, Ohio -- A Sunday negotiating session that went late into the night between the Strongsville teachers' union and Strongsville school board ended without a deal.

The two sides walked away from the bargaining table with a federal mediator shortly before 11:30 p.m.

Union officials say the board rejected the union's latest offer, described as a one-time proposal.

Strongsville Education Association officials say their offer included no pay raises and agreed to the insurance concessions the district proposed last week. The offer also included an extra 30 minutes of teaching time added to the school day.

Union officials estimate those offers combine to save the district approximately $3 million per year.

School board officials did not comment.

No new meeting time has been set.

Sunday marks the eighth week of the strike.

Teachers will return to the picket lines Monday morning.

Prosecutors move quickly to build Marathon case

WASHINGTON -- The Obama administration has a range of legal options in the Boston Marathon bombings, and that could include seeking the death penalty against the 19-year-old suspect in the case.

The administration has indicated it intends to move quickly to build a criminal case against Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

But investigators plan to first question him without informing him of his legal rights to remain silent and have an attorney present.

Several Republican lawmakers are criticizing the administration's approach because it would afford Tsarnaev more rights than he deserves.

The federal public defender for Massachusetts called for the quick appointment of a lawyer to represent Tsarnaev because of serious issues involving his interrogation in the absence of a lawyer.

Cleveland: Camera surveillance plays key role in safety

Written By kolimtiga on Sabtu, 20 April 2013 | 17.04

After two explosives rocked downtown Boston on Monday, authorities asked for any surveillance video around the scene of the crime.

Between street cameras and store security, the suspects were identified. In downtown Cleveland, more cameras are being added for the safety of our streets.

"Criminals are getting smarter, but technology is also getting smarter. So, it's hand-in-hand. For us to keep on top of our job, it's important to be proactive and keep expanding technology," says Larry Jones II, a project manager with the City of Cleveland.

There are 49 cameras constantly watching the downtown city streets and more being installed every year. Most recently, surveillance cameras were put up around the West Side Market area in Ohio City.

"One of the things we wanted to do was kind of boost security presence of the market. We know that it is a vital artery of the city, so we wanted to provide extra security there," says Jones.

Now, the city will start expanding surveillance to neighborhood streets, where extra protection is needed.

You stop a terrorist before the bomb is built.

"There are always signs and signals that are out there that can be detected and that's where you stop a terrorist attack," said Licate, an associate professor of criminal justice, emergency management and Homeland Security.

"These attacks that have been prevented,  it's been an aware individual, an aware business owner or an employee that said, 'hey, listen, there's something suspicious here,'" said Licate.

He wants his students and the rest of us to know the compounds, to be "situationally aware" like with traditional crime. If you see something, say something.

"We feel polite, we're very busy," he said. "We don't listen to that little voice in our heads that says there's something odd here."

"How do you know if they're not going to do something?" said student Kayla Grizer, who hopes to work with the FBI one day.

Chemicals like acetone, peroxides and fertilizer, fuels and acids can all be used to build a bomb.

The Department of Homeland Security's Bomb-Making Materials Awareness Program helps private business owners and their employees recognize suspicious behaviors or large amounts of dangerous chemicals. You can learn more about the program here.

Like in Boston, most terrorist bombs are homemade explosives or improvised explosive devices, IEDs. Licate says they provide terrorists the cheapest way to cause major damage.

"You can go on Google and type it how to make a bomb and tell you all the steps right there on Google. It's all out there on the internet," said Adam Daugherty, who is majoring in homeland security. "It's scary how much is public information and can get out there now."

"They are using the internet. They know where to go to get this information," Licate said of potential terrorists. "It's up to the rest of us to be aware of what to look for so we can identify when someone is in need of assistance, when they are disturbed, and might go ahead and use one of these weapons."

David Coulson, with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, says all levels of the law rely on your input.

"In addition, the public is highly encouraged to report to law enforcement any threatening statements or behavior by an individual or group. This would include online and social media which is such an active part of our daily lives today," said Coulson in a written statement.

Coulson said since the inception of the Safe Explosives Act in 2002, ATF agents have seen fewer instances where stolen commercial or military explosives are used in homemade explosives.

They have noticed an uptick in the use of commercial grade fireworks in criminal bombings. But smokeless powder, black powder and black powder substitutes have consistently been the filler of choice, possibly because they are not regulated as explosives.

Licate says he's been teaching homeland security since 9/11/2001, and students have becoming increasingly disconnected to the idea of terrorism in the U.S.

Until this week, that is. "It became real for them."

"There's so many resources available," said Rebecca Wrightsman, an emergency management major. "As we become more educated, the bad people, the terrorists, are becoming more educated on other tactics, so we have to stay up to par."

Cleveland: Camera surveillance plays key role in safety

Police converge on neighborhood outside Boston

Written By kolimtiga on Jumat, 19 April 2013 | 17.04

WATERTOWN, Mass. -- Police have converged on a neighborhood outside Boston where there were reports of explosives being detonated and police are telling reporters to turn off their cell phones.

Dozens of officers and National Guard members are in Watertown, where television outlets report that gunfire and explosions have been heard.

MORE: MIT police killed in campus shooting

A helicopter is circling overhead.

Authorities early Friday were calling for somebody to get on the ground and put their hands up and a loud thud was heard after someone shouted "fire in the hole."

Reporters are being told to move away from the scene. A police officer told a reporter: "If you want to live, turn off your cell phone."

Earlier Thursday night a campus police officer was shot and killed at MIT and authorities were searching for the person responsible.

Police: 1 bomb suspect dead; manhunt for second

WATERTOWN, Mass. -- Authorities say one of two suspects in the Boston Marathon bombing is dead and a massive manhunt is underway for another.

Authorities urged residents in Watertown, Newton, Waltham, Belmont, Cambridge and the Allston-Brighton neighborhoods of Boston to stay indoors. All mass transit was shut down.

The Middlesex district attorney says the two men are suspected of killing an MIT police officer at the college late Thursday, then stealing a car at gunpoint and later releasing its driver unharmed. Hours earlier, police had released photos of the bombing suspects and asked for the public's help finding them.

Authorities say the suspects threw explosives from the car as police followed it into Watertown. The suspects and police exchanged gunfire and one of the suspects was critically injured and later died.

Police say the suspect on loose is a "terrorist" who "came here to kill people."

MORE: Police converge on neighborhood outside Boston

Police say one of two suspects in the shooting of a Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer is dead and a massive manhunt is underway for another, who is believed to be tied to the Boston Marathon bombing.

Shortly after the MIT officer was shot dead Thursday night, police got a report of a carjacking in Cambridge, just outside Boston. One of the two suspects in that officer's shooting was killed. Police say of the at-large suspect, "We believe this to be a terrorist."

The FBI said it is working with local authorities to determine what happened.

The MIT shooting on the Cambridge campus Thursday night was followed by reports of violence in nearby Watertown, about 10 miles west of Boston.

State police spokesman David Procopio said there is a "strong possibility" the incidents are related.

The MIT officer had been responding to report of a disturbance Thursday night when he was shot multiple times, according to a statement from the Middlesex district attorney's office and Cambridge police. It said there were no other victims.

EXTRA: MIT police killed in campus shooting

In Watertown, witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots and explosions at about 1 a.m. Friday. Dozens of police officers and FBI agents were in the neighborhood and a helicopter circled overhead.

State police spokesman David Procopio said, "The incident in Watertown did involve what we believe to be explosive devices possibly, potentially, being used against the police officers."

Boston cab driver Imran Sais said he was standing on a street corner at a police barricade across from a diner when he heard an explosion.

"I heard a loud boom and then a rapid succession of pop, pop, pop," he said. "It sounded like automatic weapons. And then I heard the second explosion."

He said he could smell something burning and advanced to check it out but area residents at their windows yelled at him, "Hey, it's gunfire! Don't go that way!"

MIT said right after the 10:30 p.m. shooting that police were sweeping the campus in Cambridge and urged people to remain indoors. They urged people urged to stay away from the Stata Building, a mixed-use building with faculty offices, classrooms and a common area.

Hours later, MIT, which has about 11,000 students, said the campus was clear but the shooter was still on the loose.

FBI releases photos, video of Boston bombing suspects

Investigators have released images of two men who were at the sites where twin bombs were detonated at the Boston Marathon.

The FBI is asking for the public's help in identifying the men.  A web site has been set up for tips: https://bostonmarathontips.fbi.gov/

Anybody with information is asked to call 1-800-CALL-FBI.

The official said investigators want to question the men in the bombings - which killed three and injured 176 near the finish line of the Marathon Monday afternoon. The official cautioned that it is unclear whether they are suspects or merely witnesses.

Photos: Boston Marathon attack suspects

At one of the bomb sites, several law enforcement officials told USA TODAY, surveillance video shows a man putting down a bag. The bag appears to be similar to the black nylon pack described earlier as possibly used to carry the explosive devices, the officials said.

The blasts killed 8-year-old Martin Richard of Dorchester, 29-year-old Krystle Campbell of Medford, and Lu Lingzi, a 23-year-old Boston University graduate student from China.

At a service for victims in Boston Thursday, President Barack Obama vowed the attackers would be caught and prosecuted. "Yes, we will find you -- and, yes, you will face justice," Obama said.

In Washington, Attorney General Eric Holder said Thursday that the "full resources'' of the Justice Department were being deployed in the investigation and to guard against any future attacks.

Holder, the nation's top law enforcement officer, told a Congressional committee Thursday that the "individual or group that carried out this heinous act'' would be held accountable... "by any means available to us"

Holder's comments came after Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano told a House panel that the responsibility for the attack has yet to be linked to individuals, international or domestic terror organizations.

"We don't know,'' Napolitano told a congressional panel, as investigators in Boston continue to pursue a number of promising leads.

Authorities continue working to identify individuals at both sites as well as a number of other people in video and photographs near the explosions.

More than 50 people remain hospitalized, with 7 listed in critical condition, down from 14 Wednesday. They include a 10-year-old boy at Boston Children's Hospital whose leg was amputated and a nine-year-old girl with a leg injury. Brigham and Women's Hospital had four people in critical condition and Boston Medical Center had one. At Tufts Medical Center, five bombing victims remain under care, but none are listed as critical.

Meanwhile, families of a newlywed couple who both suffered a leg amputation below the knee are thanking supporters for an outpouring of donations.

The families of Patrick and Jessica Downes said Thursday that the generosity from friends and strangers has restored their faith in humanity. Over 4,400 people have donated more than $246,000 to the couple through GiveForward.com.

The families say they don't want the couple to worry about paying for prosthetics and modifications to their home during the recovery process.

Thirty-year-old Patrick and 32-year-old Jessica are in stable condition and recovering from surgery. They were married in Boston in August. Jessica is a nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital, one of several area hospitals treating bomb victims.

Strongsville: Two sides to see mediator Sunday afternoon

STRONGSVILLE, Ohio -- The two sides in the Strongsville City Schools teachers' strike are set to meet with a federal mediator in Independence once more on Sunday afternoon.

The meeting is set for 2 p.m.

"The federal mediator has asked that our negotiation team be present, and it will be there," said Strongsville City School Board President David Frazee.

The announcement comes just hours ahead of a scheduled Strongsville Education Association press conference Friday at 8:30 a.m. outside the Strongsville Board of Education building.

The union and district remain about $1 million apart in negotiations, according to SEA spokesperson Tracy Linscott.

A bone of contention for the union remains the district's discovery of an additional $3.2 million in unexpected revenue.

Sunday's expected meeting with a federal mediator comes on what will be the eighth week of the strike.

Death toll unclear, 100+ injured in Texas fertilizer plant explosion

WEST, Texas -- Officials say it'll be some time before they know how many people have been killed in a fertilizer plant explosion in the town of West, Texas.

Firefighters were already at the plant battling a fire when the explosion happened Wednesday night. It was so strong it could be felt from 45 miles away, and sent flames shooting high into the night sky, raining burning embers, shrapnel and debris.

Officials say more than 100 people have been injured.

The explosion has also leveled buildings for blocks in every direction. Al Vanek, a city council member, says a four-block area around the explosion "is totally decimated."

Some of damaged buildings are a housing complex with a collapsed roof, a nearby middle school and the West Rest Haven Nursing Home, where first-responders evacuated more than 130 patients.

Residents who have not evacuated are being told to stay indoors because of the threat of new explosions or leaks of ammonia from the plant.

Top spring steak deal, $35 indoor grill

Written By kolimtiga on Rabu, 17 April 2013 | 17.05

CLEVELAND -- It is considered the best-tasting most cost-effective alternative to the outdoor BBQ. And let's face it, if you live in an apartment or have condo/balcony restrictions (like I do), you can't exactly fire up the grill on a whim. Besides, our grilling weather is severely limited by mother nature.

So the next time you want that BBQ taste from the grill during a rain storm, I have an idea for you!

Over the winter (no surprise), I received many requests for indoor smokeless grills and while the demand has dropped with our spring weather, prices have dropped too. Today is a prime time to buy.

My favorite grill that I've tested is the Restaurant Classics Smokeless Indoor BBQ Grill. Not only do I like the price, but this grill is dishwasher safe! Food cooked on it tastes great and the adjustable thermostat doesn't hurt either.

Today you'll find its lowest recorded price alongside a top steak deal to compliment the bargain.

Trash piling up because of workers strike

STRONGSVILLE, Ohio -- When Bernice Major returned home from work Tuesday afternoon, she was surprised to still see her garbage at the end of her driveway.

"I was like, um... are they eventually going to come? I wasn't aware that there was a situation," she said.

Strongsville is one of several communities in Cuyahoga, Lorain, Lake, Medina, Geauga, Summit and Stark counties affected by striking Teamsters with Republic Waste Services. Local workers went on sympathy strike Monday to support their union brethren in Youngstown, where Teamsters Local 377 has been on strike since last month.

Republic Waste says 30 percent of its workers crossed the picket line Tuesday. Returning workers and managers are handling pickup during the strike, but because of the reduced staff, residents should expect delays.

Word of the trash strike irked some Strongsville residents, who have been dealing with an ongoing teachers strike.

"Oh boy. Another strike. That's just what Strongsville needs to hear right now," said Major.

Republic is asking residents to be patient and says it plans to bring in replacement workers Wednesday.

Affected residents should contact their city hall or check their municipality's website for updates on their city's trash pickup.

At Indians-Red Sox game, Boston bombing on fans' minds

CLEVELAND -- One day after the bombings at the Boston Marathon, the Red Sox met the Indians at Progressive Field.

Dreary weather kept the ballpark mostly empty, but the fans present felt somber for another reason.

The Boston Red Sox baseball team found out about the bombings at the Boston Marathon, as their bus traveled to Cleveland Monday afternoon.

Before the game Tuesday night at Progressive Field, starting pitcher Jon Lester said their hometown was weighing in their hearts.

"We've got to be together, united and stand up to this and show these people that this isn't going to break us," said Lester.

One Boston fan in the crowd wearing a Red Sox shirt says he received a tip of the hat from several Cleveland fans.

"It's somber here, in terms of people not wanting to talk about it, but thinking about it," said Jason Leathwood.

Before the first pitch, the teams held a moment of silence on the field for the victims of the bombings.

Wade and Lori Smolira drove up from Flushing in southern Ohio to cheer on the Red Sox.

"I've been a Boston fan since I was young. There's a connection because we're runners too. We took our kids to Boston last year and were standing at the same spot on the finish line. It's very near and dear to our hearts, the city of Boston," said Wade and Lori.

At the gates and throughout the stands, Cleveland Police and the Cuyahoga County Sheriffs Deputies were a noticeable presence.

In a press conference Tuesday, Police Chief Michael McGrath told Clevelanders to expect a greater police presence at large events in the near future.
