CANTON, Ohio -- Canton South High School Junior Zachery Aufderheide is close to reaching a personal goal.
"If I could just give the chance for one kid to have a normal life, then I'm just going to go for it," Aufderheide said.
He's about an inch away from donating a healthy head of hair to Locks for Love. Locks for Love uses donated hair of a certain length to create hairpieces for disadvantaged kids struggling with hair loss.
The only thing standing in the way of Zach's goal to donate to the organization for a second time is the school's dress code.
The code maintains that students hair must be kept at a certain length.
Zach says three weeks into the new school year he was told he would have to cut it. He says he explained to staff and the Canton Local Schools' board back in September what he planned to do with the hair.
According to Aufderheide, they seemed sympathetic, but later decided to uphold the dress code requiring him to cut his hair or face disciplinary action.
Zach's mom Robin says her son has a 3.5 grade point average. She was hoping the board would make a special exception, just this once.
"It does hurt because he believes in this. He's not hurting anybody. He's trying to help somebody," said Robin.
She says she'll stand behind her son, who has no plans to cut his hair.
"I can understand where they're coming from. They've had this dress code policy for so long, but I don't understand why they can't make one simple exception this one time," Zach said.
School officials have not yet responded to requests for comment.
