In many Lorain County neighborhoods, basement flooding remains a serious concern.
While the worst of Superstorm Sandy happened Monday in Northeast Ohio, plenty of people are still feeling the effects, especially those without power.
In Lorain County, basement flooding reports have come in from Avon Lake and Sheffield Lake to the city of Lorain. On Baldwin Boulevard in Lorain, trees toppled powerlines Monday evening.
With no electricity, the sump pumps in homes are not working. Sump pumps remove water that seeps into foundations below ground level during heavy rain conditions.
After five days of non-stop rain, the ground is saturated. Margaret Kocsis woke up Tuesday morning with no heat and power, and her basement floor under four inches of water.
The 90-year-old called her daughter in Painesville. Denise and Jim Fodor arrived in Lorain as soon as possible and, after searching several stores, were able to track down a generator for Margaret's home.
Within two hours, the basement waterline had noticeably receded.
Lorain County emergency management officials say power restoration crews are working around the clock cleaning up from Sandy and getting everyone back on line.
Tom Kelley says they're prioritizing critical facilities first: area nursing homes and a dialysis center that are without power, all the while tackling residential neighborhoods.
There is no estimation on when power will be fully restored.
