WKYC Web StaffSuperstorm Sandy may be getting a lot of attention for its impact on New York and the East Coast, but the enormous, powerful storm is causing destruction here in Northeast Ohio too. Below are updates on damage as reports come into the Channel 3 newsroom.
5:48 a.m.: Eight passengers are stranded on an RTA Rapid train just east of the Brookpark station because of an overhead line down on the track. The passengers will be taken to safety as soon as possible.
5:37 a.m.: The traffic light at Snow and Pearl roads in Parma is reportedly out.
Rockside Road in Seven Hills is closed from storm debris in the construction zone.
5:35 a.m.: Multiple road closures reported in Brecksville. Drive with caution this morning.
5:34 a.m.: In Bedford Heights, Aurora Road, west of Rockside Road, is closed due to a downed wire.
5:24 a.m: Cedar west of Richmond is closed in Lyndhurst due to downed power lines. This is near Legacy Village.
5:24 a.m.: River Road between Berkshire and Deerfield closed due to flooding in Gates Mills.
5:24 a.m.: Lake County dispatch says Vrooman Road is closed in Leroy Township. No evacuations.
4:40 a.m.: Amherst police say the city is without power. A pump at a BP station was knocked over in the winds and caught fire. No one was hurt.
4:40 a.m.: Medina OHP says Route 252 (Columbia Road) and Route 57 north of Route 18 closed due to flooding.
4:31 a.m.: Ashtabula Highway Patrol reports flooding in Rome Township. No evacuationss. Route 6 in Hartsgrove is closed due to a downed tree.
4:31 a.m.: Lorain Police report trees and power poles down in the city but no injuries.
4:30 a.m.: The Shoreway in BOTH direction is closed between East 55th and the Innerbelt Curve due to high water from lake waves.
4:28 a.m.: Cleveland Police report numerous power lines down throughout the city. Many major intersections have no working stoplights include: W. 140th & Lorain, East 55th & St. Clair, and E. 30th and St. Clair. Some trees are down blocking roadways.
4:20 a.m.: SR 303, just west of SR 301 in LaGrange is closed due to a fallen tree, according to ODOT.
3:48 a.m.: Power outages number more than 240,000. Sixty percent of Lakewood is without power.
3:28 a.m.: Independence Police report major flooding of the Cuyahoga River. The National Weather Service confirms this from their water level meter in the area.
3:13 a.m.: Power outages have knocked out a number of stoplights especially in Cleveland and Lakewood. Police remind drivers to treat intersections as a four-way stop when traffic signals are nor working.
3:12 a.m.: Cleveland Police say since 4 p.m. on Monday, officers have responded to more than 650 calls. Many of the calls were weather related including wires down, accidents and small fires.
2:10 a.m.: I-90 will be closed in both directions from East 55th to Dead Man's Curve due to flooding caused by waves coming off the lake.
1:30 a.m.: Power outages number more than 216,000 in Northeast Ohio.
11:29 p.m: FirstEnergy is reporting more than 186,000 outages in its service area. Cleveland among the hardest hit areas. Check and or/report outages here: http://outages.firstenergycorp.com/oh.html
11:09 p.m.: MLK Drive just north of Ambleside Drive is shut down due to downed trees. Drivers are asked to find another route.
10:58 p.m.: City of Lorain's water distribution plant is currently running on an emergency generator due to a power outage. The city is asking people to conserve water usage until further notice.
10:48 p.m.: ODOT reports power outages of more than 165,000. Some of the hardest hit areas include: Cleveland and Lorain with more than 20,000 outages in each city. Lakewood with 13,000 out. Westlake with 11,000 outages and 5,000 in Bay Village and another 5,000 in Avon Lake.
10:35 p.m.: ODOT reports all lanes on I-90 westbound are closed at East 72nd due to high water on the way from the lake. Crews will reopen the highway when the situation is safe. Drivers are being detoured via East 72nd to St. Clair to East 55th Street back to I-90.
10:30 p.m.: FirstEnergy reports on its website that power outages in Ohio top 147,000. Those outages include 85,000 in Cuyahoga and 32,000 in Lorain County
9:35 p.m.: SR 252 is closed in Medina County near Grafton due to a downed tree. Detour routes are posted for drivers.
9:32 p.m. Reports of a roof torn from a school in Lorain at East Erie and Kansas.
9:28 p.m.: Numerous reports of downed trees, branches and wires across Northeast Ohio. Some areas reported by Channel 3 crews include Mastick & Clague in North Olmsted; W. 57th Street and Memphis in Cleveland; Ridge & Biddulph in Brooklyn. There are also reports of a power outage at Crocker Park.
9:15 p.m.: Cleveland schools CEO Eric Gordon says Cleveland Schools closed Tuesday. Among other districts closed are Lorain and Lakewood. Check all the iAlerts here: http://www.wkyc.com/weather/severe_weather/cancellations_closings/default.aspx
