Cleveland Weather: Oh that lake effect

Weather can be so mean, can't it?

I mean, yesterday we were flirting with record high temperatures.  Today, we got the smackdown into the 40s...the 30s...and a snow chance is back.

This is the time of year when major swings can happen in rather short order.  This is also when the Lake really likes to make itself a major weather player.

Yes, the colder westerly wind will blow across the relatively warmer water of Lake Erie and stir up lake effect.  The type of precipitation is dependent upon a few things, but for now it looks like a rain/snow mix changing to some snow showers.

The bigger question is where?  Where will the snow fall and how much will fall?

Enter the snowbelt.

Northern Ohio snowbelts are considered to be the higher terrain areas from Lorain, Cuyahoga, northern Summit, inland Lake, Geauga, northern Portage, Ashtabula and (sometimes) Trumbull counties.

We have a primary snowbelt and a secondary snowbelt, with the primary being the area from the Summit/Cuyahoga county border through northern Geauga County into central Ashtabula county.  These are the areas that are most prone to the effect.

The secondary snowbelts are the surrounding areas that also get lake effect.

In this lake effect case (tonight and Tuesday) it looks like the westerly winds will impact northern Lorain, much of Cuyahoga county north of the Turnpike and those in Lake, Geauga, and Ashtabula counties.

What is lake effect?  Quick summary:  Cold air coming across the warmer water will pick up extra moisture (and a little heat) rising out of the Lake.  As that wind comes ashore, it is slowed by frictional forces and begins to rise.  The rising motion is compounded by the rise in terrain.  This creates a situation for condensation and quick precipitation to develop.  Depending on wind direction and speed, we can have one or multiple bands of snow (and/or rain) develop.  The bands can be large and weak or can be small and very intense...or any combination.  It is not uncommon for the sun to shine in most of northern Ohio, while a small area in the snowbelt has very heavy snow that can accumulate to some impressive measurements.

Keep an eye on the radar and see if you can spot the bands forming tonight and tomorrow.

Tonight: Rain showers turning over to some snow showers. Some accumulation possible (slushy coating) in the high terrain areas east of Cleveland). Breezy and colder.
