WKYC Web StaffCLEVELAND -- The U.S. Marshals office has ordered former Cuyahoga County Auditor Frank Russo to report to federal prison by Friday Nov. 16.
His attorney Roger Synenberg said Oct. 25 after a hearing in U.S. District Court in Akron that he expected his client would report to prison "in about 4 to 6 weeks."
Synenberg said the prison itself needed time to prepare for Russo's arrival.
Russo, 62, of Mayfield Heights, will be serving his sentence at a low-security prison in Loretto, Pennsylvania, about 90 miles east of Pittsburgh.
How long Russo will serve is still undecided.
Russo pleaded guilty to 21 charges in December, 2010 but has remained free while he cooperated with federal prosecutors and testified against other corruption probe defendants.
Russo has already been sentenced to 21 years and 10 months in prison but had made an agreement with prosecutors that they would recommend a reduction of that sentence in exchange for his cooperation.
No specific reduction was ever stated.
He will report to prison likely not knowing what the amount of the reduction will be. At the Oct. 25 hearing, U.S. District Judge Sara Lioi ruled that Russo will be allowed to report on his own to Loretto.
Lioi has yet to rule on the sentence reduction.
Russo still has to testify in the scheduled February trial of attorney Anthony Calabrese III.
Following the Oct. 25 hearing in U.S. District Court in Akron, Russo left the building and told assembled reporters he would make a statement.
"I would like to take this opportunity to apologize to my family, to my co-workers, and each and every resident of Cuyahoga County," Russo said.
"I regret what I have done. I am really, truly sorry for what I've done, with my heart, but if you look back there is nothing I can do about it." "But what I can do is make a difference in the future," the disgraced former politician continued. "I'm going to take a positive step forward to touch people's lives to make life better. Thank you very much."
