School shooting: Safety experts weigh in

The question of why the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting happened may never truly be answered or understood.

Now, a lot of people tonight still dealing with the shock of it all have focused their attention to security. Specifically, what can be done to insure this doesn't happen anywhere else again?

While some wonder if it's time for metal detectors in school buildings, security expert Timothy Dimoff says prevention goes a lot deeper than that.

First it starts with accepting that what happened in Connecticut can happen anywhere.

"We have to start assuming and believing that it can only then can only then can we start to prevent it and we can prevent a lot of this or reduce it," said Dimoff.

While what exactly led up to the shooting at Sandy Hook is still unclear, Dimoff says his research shows time and time again that shooters often show signs of trouble before following through with the act.

Often times, he says their threats go without intervention.

"Take it seriously when someone says 'I've got some issues with someone and I would like to cause some bodily harm.'"

School Safety Consultant Ken Trump says security systems can help but only to an extent.

School officials and mental health officials, he says, need to keep a close eye on potential problems long before the threat shows up.

"We need to strike a balance between mental detectors and metal detectors... we can have some security at our schools, tighten up but most of all it's the human element," said Trump.
