SHAKER HEIGHTS -- It is the worst kind of tragedy one week before Christmas.
A Shaker Heights family awoke to find their home on fire early Tuesday morning. Fire fighters got the call at 4:01 a.m.to 3333 Daleford.
When they arrived on scene four minutes later, the fire chief says, the first floor was engulfed in flames. Neighbors say a mother, and four children, including a niece and nephew, jumped out of the home to escape.
Neighbors say the father went back inside the home to rescue his daughter, still inside. Neither the 62 year old father or his 18 year old daughter made it back outside.
The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner has not released the names of the victims, but says they most likely died of smoke inhalation.
A Shaker Heights fire fighter and a Beachwood fire fighter were treated for minor injuries. The five other survivors who escaped the home were taken to Ahuja Medical Center. Fire fighters say the cause is still under investigation. A spokesperson confirms the mother is in stable condition as of Tuesday evening.
Word of the fire spread through the Fernway neighborhood even before the true extent of the tragedy was known this morning. Friends of the family say they'd lived in Shaker Heights a while, but only recently moved to Daleford.
They described the father who died as a wonderful family man, who did everything he could for his family. Friends say several people, from neighbors to friends to strangers, have already offered to help the family, who lost everything in addition to their loved ones.
The American Red Cross helped immediately with food, clothing and mental health, but a spokesperson says the family's church, Cedar Hill Baptists, is also stepping in to collect donations. Stay with Channel 3 for more information on how you can help.
