NORTH CANTON -- At St. Luke Lutheran Community, powdered sugar is wafting in the air.
"It goes everywhere!" says Jean Jones.
Mrs. Jones and her friends at the senior care community center are baking up 54 dozen cookies to be packed up with handwritten letters and mailed to troops preparing for deployment.
Calling it "Operation Grandma's Love," the women are hoping to let the men and women who serve our country know they are in people's thoughts and prayers this season.
"Letting them know they mean a lot to us, and we're so appreciative of what they do," said Mrs. Jones.
It's a community effort: Bueller's Fresh Market donated the ingredients and Finney's Pharmacy is taking care of the shipping costs.
The grandmothers chose a U.S. Marine Corps unit at Goodfellow Air Force Base in San Angelo, Texas. One of the Marines there is the from North Canton. The unit is training to deploy in the near future, and may be overseas before the end of the year.
Gerald Cain is helping pack up the boxes.
A World War Two veteran, Cain remembers receiving care packages when he was a young serviceman.
"Soldiers will always appreciate cookies from grandma. It's very special when you receive something from home," Cain said.
The challenge Operation Grandma's Love is posing this holiday season: send a care package to a soldier. From cookies to cards, they'll appreciate the love.
"We're just trying to put a little Christmas in their lives!" Mrs. Jones said.
