MADISON TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- Fire investigators are getting closer to finding out what triggered the explosion that leveled a house on Parkview Drive and damaged five other homes.
Madison Fire District Chief Gene Lutz says arson is not the cause. A gas leak is suspected, but the source is still unknown.
"Everything's coming up negative. We have the appliances, and there doesn't seem to be an issue with them," he said.
Investigators say the gas lines leading up to the home were clear of any leaks, so now they are turning their attention on the home's gas meter.
Chief Lutz hopes to have the meter tested within the next week.
The explosion happened around 12:30 early Sunday morning. The force of the blast pushed the neighboring house off its foundation, about 8 inches.
Inside that house, Janet Sency had just turned out the lights in the living room, where her 8-year old granddaughter, Alyssa, was asleep on the couch.
"I heard a freight train come through - it sounded like," said Sency.
The blast sent debris rocketing toward Sency's home, and nearly caused the wall to collapse on her granddaughter.
"She was crying," said Sency, as she choked back tears. "So I wrapped her up, and told her it was okay, and we ran out and I called 911."
Insurance inspectors say that Sency's home may be a total loss. But Sency is still counting her blessings - one very big one.
"It's a miracle," she said, as she cried. "Sure, the home - but I don't care. We aren't going to any funerals, there are no scratches, no Band-Aids."
"It's just wonderful."
