AKRON, Ohio -- It was exactly 13 years ago, on Jan. 31, 2000, when two friends from Akron were stabbed to death outside a nightclub in Atlanta.
"We are talking about a family member here. This was just somebody who was on the street," Greg Wilson told CNN.
Wilson is the uncle of Jacinth Baker. Baker and his friend, Richard Lollar, were stabbed to death, at a club party after the 2000 Superbowl.
Baltimore Ravens Linebacker Ray Lewis and two others were originally charged in the murders.
Four months later, Lewis pleaded guilty to a much lesser charge: Obstruction of justice.
A jury also decided the other two men killed Baker and Lollar in self defense.
Year after year, the victims' relatives kept the story alive in local news.
Lollar's family protested outside Cleveland Browns Stadium every time Lewis and the Ravens came to town, in the hope that he'd speak with them about what happened that night.
"I want my nephew's name to live on. They keep talking about the Ray Lewis story. This is not the Ray Lewis story, this is the Richard Lollar and Jacinth Baker story," Cindy Lollar-Owens, Lollar's aunt, told Channel 3 in a 2000 interview.
As Ray Lewis heads into his last game before retiring from a storied career, the superstar football player told reporters he wasn't going to talk about that part of his past.
"If you take a 13-year break, as hard as it is for them, as hard as it is to talk about the things you want me to talk about, I don't believe honestly this is the appropriate time," Lewis said.
The families of Baker and Lollar are still waiting for that time.
"You got all this attention glorifying him. And he was involved in what happened down in Atlanta, but people don't seem to care. They are more interested in football," said Wilson.
