Neighborhood pitches in to help West Side Market

OHIO CITY -- The latest announcement from the City of Cleveland says the West Side Market will reopen on February 12.

The main building has been closed since Wednesday when a fire destroyed two vendor stands and left smoke damage throughout the hall.

All foods and perishable items had to be thrown out, setting vendors back right before the normally busy Super Bowl weekend.

Roberto Rodriguez is owner of Orale!, contemporary Mexican Cuisine. He's been at the market for 14 years and lost about $6,000 worth of food in the fire. 

The Orale! stand-alone restaurant on W. 25th Street is open for dining, but Rodriguez says the majority of his business is done at the market.

"When you look at the news and pictures, it doesn't really tell you what the damage is," Rodriguez said.

Several events are planned during the next several weeks, as the market remains closed, and once it reopens.

Through Tuesday, February 5, Market Garden Brewery will donate $1 for every $5 pour of their new brew, Market Recovery Lager to the vendors' association.

"They supported us for 100 years. Now it's our turn to give back a little bit," said Jeff Draeger.

Happy Dog will donate $1 of every hotdog sale to market relief efforts.

On Tuesday, February 5 at 7 p.m., Market Garden Brewery will also host a fundraiser event, with drink proceeds going to help the market.

Ohio City Incorporated is helping organize some other efforts, including temporary vendor space for businesses who want to resume sales before February 12th.

The OCI Director says an extravaganza for reopening day is in the works, complete with music.

There are also discussions about gift certificate promotions to draw customers back in when the doors reopen.

Online (click on the link on this page) the West Side Market has posted a list of vendors who are closed inside the main building, but open at their other storefronts around Northeast Ohio.

Others are offering up monetary donations: Charter One Bank has pledged $10,000.

Chef Michael Symon says he is also working on putting something together to support the West Side Market.

And a Cash Mob event is also in the works for March 2, to generate as much businesses as possible and help the vendors make up for lost time and money.
