AKRON, Ohio -- More than 1,700 homes and businesses in Akron lost power early Thursday morning after a car crashed into a pole on Clifton Avenue.

The crash was reported around 2:50 a.m. at the intersection of Clifton Avenue and East Cuyahoga Falls Avenue. Police said the woman driving the car may crashed due to a medical emergency.

The crash victim is a diabetic. She is in stable condition and was speaking with EMS crews before being taken to a nearby hospital. The extent of her injuries are not known.

The pole was damaged and wires were strewn across the roadway, reports said.

Moments later, reports of blown transformers began streaming in to Akron dispatchers. Emergency crews in Akron and Cuyahoga Falls both responded to calls for alarms at area businesses, as far away as Chapel Hill Mall.

FirstEnergy outage maps reported more than 1,700 outages in the area, almost entirely in Akron, immediately following the crash. A call to a FirstEnergy spokesman was not immediately returned.

That number dropped to 615 just after 4 a.m., but rose back up to 1,230 within the hour.

East Cuyahoga Falls Avenue is closed from Riverside Drive to Clifton Avenue.

Officials have not confirmed a direct connection between the crash and the power outages at this time.
