CLEVELAND -- The Inauguration of Pope Francis starts in the early morning hours for those of us in Northeast Ohio. Here's a look at the pope's schedule.
The installation mass, which the Vatican calls "The Inauguration of the Petrine Ministry of the Bishop of Rome," is only part of the events. Before all of that, Pope Francis begins the day when he is driven in front of the crowd in St. Peter's Square at about 3:45 a.m. EDT.
The ceremony itself begins at about 4:30 a.m. EDT and is expected to last for about two hours.
While the ceremony itself is done in Latin, Bible readings will be done in English, Spanish and Greek, with additional prayers in Italian, Russian, French, Arabic, Swahili and Chinese.
Pope Francis will deliver the homily in Italian.
Services will start with Pope Francis entering St. Peter's Basilica, where he will head to the Vatican grottoes and pray at the tomb of St. Peter.
From there, the Fisherman's Ring and pallium, traditional symbols of the office, will be carried in procession back up to the Basilica and out to the square, where an altar and platform will be waiting.
Pope Francis receives the symbols in St. Peter's Square at 5 a.m., which is a formal rite of the inauguration. The mass will begin closer to 5:15 a.m.
During this time, the pope will hear pledges of obedience from select cardinals.
Mass ends with the signing of Salve Regina, a prayer to Mary an da Te Deum of thanksgiving.
After the mass, the pope greets officials delegations and world leaders in the basilica.
