CHARDON -- T.J. Lane's family made a brief statement after the sentencing hearing outside the courtroom.
His younger sister, Sadie Lane, read a written statement about how she has tried to deal with all that has happened in the last year.
Sadie was in the cafeteria the day of the shootings. She says she has kept the victims' families in her prayers and asked that her family be remembered too.
"The brother in the courtroom and the brother who did this are not the brother I knew."
Sadie says has come to believe that only hope and compassion can help the community heal.
The family had to wait to make its statement, because T.J. Lane told his lawyer he did not want anyone to speak on his behalf in court.
