CLEVELAND -- One day after the bombings at the Boston Marathon, the Red Sox met the Indians at Progressive Field.
Dreary weather kept the ballpark mostly empty, but the fans present felt somber for another reason.
The Boston Red Sox baseball team found out about the bombings at the Boston Marathon, as their bus traveled to Cleveland Monday afternoon.
Before the game Tuesday night at Progressive Field, starting pitcher Jon Lester said their hometown was weighing in their hearts.
"We've got to be together, united and stand up to this and show these people that this isn't going to break us," said Lester.
One Boston fan in the crowd wearing a Red Sox shirt says he received a tip of the hat from several Cleveland fans.
"It's somber here, in terms of people not wanting to talk about it, but thinking about it," said Jason Leathwood.
Before the first pitch, the teams held a moment of silence on the field for the victims of the bombings.
Wade and Lori Smolira drove up from Flushing in southern Ohio to cheer on the Red Sox.
"I've been a Boston fan since I was young. There's a connection because we're runners too. We took our kids to Boston last year and were standing at the same spot on the finish line. It's very near and dear to our hearts, the city of Boston," said Wade and Lori.
At the gates and throughout the stands, Cleveland Police and the Cuyahoga County Sheriffs Deputies were a noticeable presence.
In a press conference Tuesday, Police Chief Michael McGrath told Clevelanders to expect a greater police presence at large events in the near future.
