Cleveland: Council OKs transfer of lakefront parks to Metroparks

CLEVELAND -- Improvements may be coming this June to six parks along Lake Erie.

Monday night, Cleveland City Council approved the transfer of the parks from the care of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources to Cleveland Metroparks.

Metroparks will make a decision on the transfer sometime in the next couple of weeks.

The state parks up for transfer include: Edgewater Park, East 55th Marina, Gordon Park, Euclid Beach Park, Villa Angela Park and Wildwood Park.

Ward 11 City Councilman Mike Polensek has pushed for the transfer for the last few years.

State support for the six parks is on the decline; Polensek says, ODNR is about $20 million behind in maintenance on the parks.

Polensek thinks Metroparks will do a better job of upkeep and of making the parks more open and inviting to the public.

"They're an outstanding institution. Everything they touch, they improve," Polensek said of the Metroparks.

The acquisition would also extend the "Emerald Necklace," as the Metroparks are known, up to the shores of Lake Erie.

Initial improvements proposed by the council would include fishing platforms, as well as breakwall and shore protection, beach nourishment and redesign, pavement, rehab of bathroom facilities and pedestrian bridges.

Some of the money to fix up the parks would be passed from the state to the Metroparks.

People who frequent the state lakefront parks are excited at the prospect that they may become a part of the Metroparks.

"I personally think Metroparks would do a better job," said Eddie Petway, walking his dog at Edgewater Park.

"I think it would be good for improving the place and making it more family friendly and kid-safe," said Mia Ambry, with her family at Euclid Beach Park on Monday.
