NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Haslam family of Tennessee is trying to control the damage after a federal investigation into its multibillion-dollar travel center business.

The family has built wealth and influence that spans business, sports and politics in the state and beyond.

Jimmy Haslam, the CEO of Pilot Flying J, also owns the NFL's Cleveland Browns. His brother Bill is the governor of Tennessee. Their father played on the University of Tennessee's national championship team in 1951 and founded what is the sixth-largest privately held company in the country.

An affidavit released after a raid last week claims sales employees withheld rebates owed to trucking firms so they could boost profits and pad their commissions.

Jimmy Haslam says he has ordered audits and suspensions and personally reached out to customers who were insulted in secret recordings.
