GALAX, Va. -- Virginia State Police said three people have been killed and more than 25 are injured following a 95-vehicle pileup on Interstate 77 near the Virginia-North Carolina border.

Reports indicated the bus for the Medina varsity softball team was involved in the crash while on the way to Myrtle Beach. The team's Twitter (@medinafastpitch) feed indicated Sunday that all the girls were ok.

State police said a series of wrecks began around 1:15 p.m. Sunday in the southbound lanes in the area of Fancy Gap Mountain in southwest Virginia. There was heavy fog at the time. They said there were 17 seperate crashes involving 95 vehicles within a mile span of interstate.

State police spokeswoman Corinne Geller said several vehicles caught fire, but were later put out.

The interstate was closed in both directions. Northbound lanes were closed so emergency vehicles could get to the southbound lanes.
