Trash piling up because of workers strike

STRONGSVILLE, Ohio -- When Bernice Major returned home from work Tuesday afternoon, she was surprised to still see her garbage at the end of her driveway.

"I was like, um... are they eventually going to come? I wasn't aware that there was a situation," she said.

Strongsville is one of several communities in Cuyahoga, Lorain, Lake, Medina, Geauga, Summit and Stark counties affected by striking Teamsters with Republic Waste Services. Local workers went on sympathy strike Monday to support their union brethren in Youngstown, where Teamsters Local 377 has been on strike since last month.

Republic Waste says 30 percent of its workers crossed the picket line Tuesday. Returning workers and managers are handling pickup during the strike, but because of the reduced staff, residents should expect delays.

Word of the trash strike irked some Strongsville residents, who have been dealing with an ongoing teachers strike.

"Oh boy. Another strike. That's just what Strongsville needs to hear right now," said Major.

Republic is asking residents to be patient and says it plans to bring in replacement workers Wednesday.

Affected residents should contact their city hall or check their municipality's website for updates on their city's trash pickup.
