Local hat maker tops off outfits for Kentucky Derby

You could call Marta Glazen a connoisseur of chapeaus.

"A hat is so personal," she says. "It's very magical."

But, to be exact, Glazen is a milliner, someone who makes hats.

"I thought I was going to be a fashion designer," she explains.

She attended Virginia Marti College of Art and Design where she took a hat-making class and found her passion.

In 2007, Glazen opened a hat shop in Cleveland and has been helping women ever since top off outfits ever since.

"I'm lucky to say that, since I started six years ago, I've never been without a customer," Marta says while wearing a fashionable pink hat topped with a flower.

This time of year Glazen's customers are clamoring for show stoppers to wear on the biggest day of the year for hats: the Kentucky Derby.

Her store is stocked with handmade creations by Glazen herself and also hats she's found around the world.

"It's Christmas for me, the Derby, because people know I'm here. I have people that drive from Pennsylvania. I get people that e-mail me," she says. "I've become the place to go for the Derby because I pick out the hats that I know the women will wear."

And wearing a hat goes beyond making a fashion statement.

"You feel like a lady," Glazen says. "It shows that you're a confident person. I think every woman should put a hat on and feel confident."
