NORTH OLMSTED -- A 15-year-old North Olmsted High School student was killed in an overnight hit-skip traffic incident in North Olmsted.
The accident was reported on Brookpark Road, between Great Northern Boulevard and Columbia Road, around 11:30 p.m. Thursday.
Bruce-Malik Wayne Adams II, 15, of North Olmsted, was found in the eastbound lanes of Brookpark Road. The driver and car involved were not at the scene when police arrived.
A family friend tells Beres that Malik was returning a cell phone to Walmart when he was struck and killed.
Family members say Malik was wearing a dark shirt and red shorts when he was struck. Some shoppers and merchants complained that this stretch of Brookpark needs better, brighter street lighting.
Police say there is little doubt that the driver was aware of what happened.
North Olmsted Police Capt. Mike Kilbane said, "From the impact, yes, the driver would be aware something was struck."
Police and Malik's family and friends are urging the driver to turn himself in.
Family friend Larry Burkhalter Jr said, "Reveal yourself. It's the Godly thing to do. Turn yourself in...we should not be burying our kids. Our kids should be burying us."
Crimestoppers has offered a reward for information regarding this incident.
Kilbane is asking anyone with information or any witnesses to call police or Crimestoppers at 216-252-7463.
Administrators at NOHS had guidance counselors available to talk with students.
Brookpark Road was closed for a time overnight.
