CLEVELAND -- Police are searching for two possibly three men wanted in connection with a violent home invasion in which an elderly couple was beaten, robbed and the elderly woman kidnapped.

From the outside of their home on Victory Avenue, there's no sign of the struggle that Richard and Margaret Kovachik faced Monday night. Even neighbors can't make sense of the violence.

"You gotta wonder what goes through people's minds, what compels them to terrorize somebody, break into their house, bound them, take them away just because they want to get some jewelry or a few bucks?" said Joseph Stanley, who works nearby.

Cleveland police say Richard Kovachik opened the door and two or three men pushed themselves inside, beat the 83-year-old man and his 80-year old wife, and then duct taped them up while the suspects robbed the couple for a bank card.

Then the suspects fled the scene, taking the couple's Chevy Malibu, with Maragart Kovachik in bound in the trunk.

"It's sad, it's a shame," said Cheryl McCoy, who lives around the block. "We all look out for each other, we have a lot of elderly ladies that live on our street, we help out, and we watch each other."

The police report says they tracked the men trying to use the card at an east side Marathon ATM. A block away, outside Wolf's Den, police found the stolen car near East 83rd Street and Cedar Avenue and a shaken, but stable woman still inside.

"It was such a horrible thing, I thought that it was a vengeance thing," said their neighbor and church friend Joanna Somerville. Members of their church family at Blessed Trinty Parish say they've visited the couple at Fairview Hospital, where they're badly beaten, but they worry those won't be the only scars.

"Emotionally it's hard to get over those sorts of things. I'm on my way out to pick up a couple of cards," said Somerville. "Just to let them know that we truly love them."

Friends tell Channel 3 News it's hard to say when the Kovachiks might be released. They say the couple is active for their ages, and would never be described as "feeble."

Cleveland police are still investigating, using evidence from a witness to help them find the men responsible. No arrests or detailed suspect descriptions have been released.
