SHELBY -- A mechanic finds a baby's body in a box in the trunk of a car left for several days at a repair shop.
Police now tell WKYC that a 17-year-old girl has admitted having the baby in January or February. No word on the official cause of death.
The teen told police she put the baby in the box and put it in the car. She had been driving around with it in the car ever since.
The body was discovered in a car at Broadway Auto and Exhaust, at 211 N. Gamble Street.
As the mechanic worked on the car Tuesday, he smelled an odor. He investigated the cause of the odor, got into the trunk and found a box.
He set the box aside while trying to see if an animal had gotten into the trunk. He then realized that the odor was coming from the box.
As he was taking the box to the curb to dispose of it, he opened it and saw that it was not, in fact, an animal, but a baby.
Police were called at 2 p.m. Police have identified the owner of the vehicle and established that the 17-year-old drives the car regularly.
The Richland County Coroner's office is on the scene and the Bureau of Criminal Identification is enroute at 4 p.m.
