CLEVELAND -- A man who was shot while trying to stop a childhood friend from driving drunk has died.
Authorities say 43-year-old Java Bowling III died Friday after the incident last week.
It started when Bowling attempted to take 40-year-old Scott Campbell Sr.'s car keys.
A fight ensued outside Bowling's home, which is when police say Campbell shot Bowling in the chest and ran from the scene.
Police caught up with Campbell shortly after.
"He was a great guy, this world lost a good man and I lost a good friend and brother to a senseless act of violence," Bowling's brother Jason told Ch.3's A.J. Ross in an exclusive interview.
"He was just trying to calm him down and that happened," explained Kelley Bowling, who witnessed the incident.
"I just hope that he (Campbell) realizes what he did and how bad he hurt family," she said.
Campbell was initially arrested for felonious assault and having a weapon under disability.
He remains in police custody with more charges likely pending.
