CLEVELAND -- Back to school is always an exciting time, but it's also the time kids tend to share germs.

Younger children tend to touch their eyes, noses and mouths more often and can spread bacteria and viruses like flu, colds, pink eye and strep throat.

Aside from the golden rule of routinely washing hands for a minimum of 20 seconds with warm water and soap, teach the kids to avoid water fountains, too. Often they touch the spigot with their mouths, and that's where bacteria can live. Have them use their own water bottles and teach them not to share with other kids.

Hand sanitizer is key, especially before and after eating lunch. Those cafeteria trays are a hotbed for bacteria.

Getting enough sleep can help boost the immune system, and sleep experts say 10 or 11 hours a night for kids is best.

Also make sure they stay active and eat balanced meals with vitamin C to help boost the immune system.

Lastly, winter is coming, so make sure they dress for the weather.
