CLEVELAND -- Roughly 50 members of the Cleveland Plain Dealer staff learned their jobs were eliminated Wednesday morning.

The paper's parent company, Advance Publications, warned the staff in a memo earlier this week.

Still, the phone calls came as a surprise to many.

Channel 3 also learned today that some employees at Sun Newspapers were also laid off. It's still unclear how many, but Sun News is owned by the same company -- Advance Publications.

Those losing their jobs at Sun included editors, reporters and photographers.

Plain Dealer employees sat by their phones Wednesday morning, waiting for a call to tell them to either come into work or that they've already worked their last day.

On the grassroots Save the Plain Dealer Facebook page, the status update told followers these layoffs will damage the community.

"Many of those let go will be familiar names to readers - reporters, columnists, photographers and artists whose bylines have accompanied some of the paper's finest content, and whose expertise touches virtually every subject the paper covers, from transportation and investigative reporting to education and sports coverage."

The Plain Dealer layoffs were spread over every department. Those who are still on staff will learn Thursday how they'll be "reorganized."

The Newspaper Guild contract still allows for 5 more staff members to be eliminated by 2015.

Some employees posted on their own Facebook pages about the cuts.

One longtime Sun News editor wrote: After 39 years, I am one of those let go today under the new structure. It was a great career and I will miss it and the people. Met and worked with some great folks over the years. For you newspaper veterans, --30-- - at Sun News offices. Leaving Sun for the last time.

After layoffs and the rally today, former colleagues met up at Market Garden in Ohio City.

Owner, Sam McNulty says the phone has been ringing off the hook all day with people calling in to buy rounds for laid off employees.

Among those pledging rounds were the Pittsburgh Tribune, the Columbus Dispatch, as well as a guy from Norway.

They raised over 4500 dollars in total.
