RAVENNA, Ohio -- Could Northeast Ohio be the launching ground for missiles that would shoot down nuclear rockets?

The Department of Defense says it is considering a location in Ravenna as a site for anti-ballistic missiles.

More specifically, we're talking about the Camp Ravenna Joint Military Training Center.

While no decision has been made, we're asking why Northeast Ohio made the short list.

Channel 3's Will Ujek was at the site today.

The Missile Defense Agency was directed by Congress to do a suitability study on the East Coast for a potential missile interceptor site.

It started with more than 450 locations and now has narrowed it to five.

One of those is right here in Ravenna.

Lonnie Scarlett has lived in the Ravenna area all his life.

His five brothers all served in the military, and one worked at the Ravenna arsenal.

Now used as a training center for the National Guard, Camp Ravenna fences in nearly 20,000 acres of land.

It was that large amount of land that helped land the site on the short list.

The Ravenna location joins others in Maine, New York, Vermont and Michigan as the five sites being considered.

The Department of Defense already has two ground based interceptors in place, both on the West Coast, but they range drastically in size.

Fort Greely in Alaska houses 40 missile silos over 800 acres, while the California air base has just four silos on 20 acres.

Rep. Tim Ryan, Sen. Sherrod Brown and Sen. Rob Portman all support a missile defense site in Ravenna, citing the possible addition of jobs and regional safety.

Residents around Ravenna don't seem to mind either way.
