Natural gas services expand in Northeast Ohio

Written By kolimtiga on Selasa, 05 Maret 2013 | 17.04

NORTH RIDGEVILLE -- This winter, thousands of Northeast Ohioans have something they've never had before: natural gas heat.

Local gas companies are placing new pipelines in new neighborhoods every day.

Amy Koncelik with Columbia Gas says natural gas prices are near record lows.

"I think historically, the last two years, 2011 and 2012 have probably been the busiest we've been in terms of new business," Koncelik explains.

In 2012, Columbia Gas added 71 miles of pipeline in Ohio, connecting more than 8,000 new customers.

Dominion East added nearly 26 miles of pipeline, for nearly 5,800 customers.

Because of the proliferation of shale drilling -- also known as fracking -- the gas supply is growing.

Sue Crompton just had her home hooked up to gas heat in November.

"It's been warm. It stays warm all the time," Crompton says.

She says she's already noticed a difference over electricity, a savings of about $100 a month on her heating bill.

"We had no problem with electric, but then the price started going up."

When the Cromptons moved into their North Ridgeville subdivision in 2004, the only energy option was electric.

Crompton says the developer began adding gas lines about 18 months ago, and she and her husband jumped at the opportunity to sign up.

They paid for the line to be connected from the outside to the inside of the home, and paid for a new gas furnace. Their developer paid for the neighborhood installation of the gas lines.

The Cromptons haven't totally given up on electricity. They still use electricity for their cooking appliances and lighting.

"But we have no regrets about getting gas."

Student's video shows packed Strongsville classroom

STRONGSVILLE -- A high school student in Strongsville City Schools sent us the video above saying it shows how crammed the classrooms were Monday for the first day of the teachers strike.

The student, who asked to remain anonymous, says that classes were extra crowded because there weren't enough substitutes to fill in for the number of teachers who are out on strike.

The Strongsville Education Association overwhelmingly voted in favor of the strike Sunday night, stating they have undergone months of fruitless contract negotiations.

We received numerous calls throughout the day from people who say some teachers were acting "out of line" as they picketed outside of school buildings Monday.

Cleveland Weather: More snow coming

This next storm system (coming Tuesday into early Wednesday) is very much a location, location, location type of scenario when it comes to potential accumulation.

You see, we will be receiving the product of two storm systems morphing into one.  Throw in the fact that this is now early March (higher sun angle, longer days...) and things get very complicated on the forecasting side.

A northern low (now in the northern Plains) will merge with a southern low (now in the southern Plains) to form one big storm in the Ohio Valley.  This storm will then trek to the Eastern Seaboard.

Just how the merger takes place is the big question...there is very rarely a storm that goes exactly as planned (forecast), which is why it is important to keep up with the latest.

As of today, the merger will be taking place tomorrow afternoon into the evening.  We will have a dry start to Tuesday (some sun, even) but clouds will increase and the snow will start accumulating late Tuesday.

The timing of the snow looks to be mid afternoon for areas south and west to late night for areas far northeast.

For Richland and Ashland counties -> Winter Storm Warning: accumulations of 4" to 8" possible by Wednesday morning

For Huron, Wayne, Holmes, Stark, Tuscarawas and Carroll counties-> Winter Weather Advisory: accumulations of 2" to 5" possible by Wednesday morning

For Erie, Lorain, Cuyahoga, Medina, Summit, Lake, Geauga, Portage, Ashtabula and Trumbull counties (no current alerts): accumulations of a light coating to 2" or 3" is possible by Wednesday morning (lightest totals northeast)

This is NOT lake effect, although the lake may add some extra moisture to the mixture.

As the storm gets closer and we get a better look at how the merger takes place, you may find that the warnings and advisories are changed by the National Weather Service.

Of course, we'll keep you up to date with the latest.  Stay tuned.

Tuesday: Increasing clouds in the morning. Snow showers in the afternoon and evening. Breezy. Mid 30s

Wednesday: Early morning snow with gusty wind.  Snow tapers off midday and we'll be mostly cloudy to partly sunny late afternoon.  Mid 30s

Thursday: Mostly cloudy to partly sunny with a few flurries. Mid 30s

Friday: Partly cloudy to mostly sunny. Upper 30s/low 40s

Saturday: Partly cloudy.  Low/mid 40s

Sunday: Partly sunny & mild.  Mid 40s

Monday:  Mostly cloudy with scattered rain showers.  Mid 40s

Strongsville teachers go on strike

Written By kolimtiga on Senin, 04 Maret 2013 | 17.05

STRONGSVILLE, Ohio -- The Strongsville Education Association (SEA) voted by an overwhelming majority in favor of a work stoppage effective at 12:01 a.m. Monday, March 4.

The vote was held at the Holiday Inn in Strongsville Sunday evening after negotiations with the Strongsville Board of Education failed Saturday.

"We have always been willing to negotiate and to make concessions to reach the fair and equitable contract that our members deserve," SEA spokesperson Christine Canning says. "However, the Board has shown a callous disregard for its teachers, its students and its community by refusing to negotiate any longer and attempting to impose a contract that will ultimately hurt our kids."

A SEA press release states a 10-day strike notice was initially issued on Feb. 21 after "months of fruitless negotiations."

"While we had hoped it would not be necessary to leave our classrooms, the reckless and irrational actions of the Board have left us with no choice but to strike for our very survival," Canning continues. "It is clear that the Board doesn't care about the long-term impact their demands would have on the quality of education in this community. Instead, they are pursuing a political agenda that wastes taxpayer dollars on lawyers and security guards instead of investing in our children and the teachers who serve them every day."

Earlier Sunday, substitute teachers held a meeting inside Strongsville City Hall to plan for the potential Monday strike. As the substitutes were walking in for the meeting, many teachers with Strongsville City Schools were there protesting. Some people say the Strongsville teachers were engaging in "hostile chants" and reportedly cursed at some of the substitutes.

Police were called to the scene to make sure everything was peaceful.

SEA represents 383 teachers, guidance counselors and psychologists who have been working without a contract since June. According to a SEA press release, this number reflects a reduction of approximately 100 teachers in the last five years.

WKYC's attempts to reach Board President David Frazee for comment have been unsuccessful.
