Superstorm Sandy blog: Storm updates

Superstorm Sandy may be getting a lot of attention for its impact on New York and the East Coast, but the enormous, powerful storm is causing destruction here in Northeast Ohio too.  Below are updates on damage as reports come into the Channel 3 newsroom.

2:10 a.m.:  I-90 will be closed in both directions from East 55th to Dead Man's Curve due to flooding caused by waves coming off the lake. 

1:30 a.m.: Power outages number more than 216,000 in Northeast Ohio.

11:29 p.m: FirstEnergy is reporting more than 186,000 outages in its service area.  Cleveland among the hardest hit areas.  Check and or/report outages here: http://outages.firstenergycorp.com/oh.html

 

11:09 p.m.: MLK Drive just north of Ambleside Drive is shut down due to downed trees.  Drivers are asked to find another route.

10:58 p.m.: City of Lorain's water distribution plant is currently running on an emergency generator due to a power outage.  The city is asking people to conserve water usage until further notice.

10:48 p.m.: ODOT reports power outages of more than 165,000.  Some of the hardest hit areas include: Cleveland and Lorain with more than 20,000 outages in each city.  Lakewood with 13,000 out.  Westlake with 11,000 outages and 5,000 in Bay Village and another 5,000 in Avon Lake.  

10:35 p.m.: ODOT reports all lanes on I-90 westbound are closed at East 72nd due to high water on the way from the lake.  Crews will reopen the highway when the situation is safe.  Drivers are being detoured via East 72nd to St. Clair to East 55th Street back to I-90. 

 

10:30 p.m.: FirstEnergy reports on its website that power outages in Ohio top 147,000.  Those outages include 85,000 in Cuyahoga and 32,000 in Lorain County

 

9:35 p.m.: SR 252 is closed in Medina County near Grafton due to a downed tree.  Detour routes are posted for drivers.

9:32 p.m. Reports of a roof torn from a school in Lorain at East Erie and Kansas.

 

9:28 p.m.:  Numerous reports of downed trees, branches and wires across Northeast Ohio.  Some areas reported by Channel 3 crews include Mastick & Clague in North Olmsted; W. 57th Street and Memphis in Cleveland; Ridge & Biddulph in Brooklyn.  There are also reports of a power outage at Crocker Park.

 

9:15 p.m.: Cleveland schools CEO Eric Gordon says Cleveland Schools closed Tuesday.  Among other districts closed  are Lorain and Lakewood.  Check all the iAlerts here: http://www.wkyc.com/weather/severe_weather/cancellations_closings/default.aspx
