Cold air flowing over the warmer waters of the Great Lakes.
That is the simple explanation of lake effect, which is a wind driven event. The wind direction arrows will point to where the snow will go, and in this case - right into the heart of the snowbelt.
We are looking at 2" to 5" of accumulation for the primary snowbelt areas in eastern Cuyahoga, far southern Lake, northern Geauga, northern Trumbull counties, and most all of Ashtabula county. These are the areas with the Lake Snow Advisory through early Sunday morning.
For Lorain, western and southern Cuyahoga, Medina, Summit and Portage counties (secondary snowbelt) expect less than 2" of accumulation.
Otherwise it will be cloudy, cold and windy. Wind chills will drop into the 20s and likely stay there for Saturday, since the temperatures won't be leaving the middle 30s.
The lake snow may linger into early Sunday before ending. Mostly cloudy to partly sunny skies will then rule.
Still watching a storm system for Tuesday...might be snow or could be nothing at all. Let's get through this weekend first.
Tonight: Scattered lake snow, otherwise cloudy, windy and cold. Upper 20s/low 30s
Saturday: Scattered lake snow. Mainly cloudy. Breezy and cold. Mid 30s
Sunday: Early flurries may linger north, otherwise mostly cloudy to partly sunny. Breezy. Upper 30s/near 40
Monday: Early sun giving way to clouds and then a chance for showers later in the day. Near 40
Tuesday: Mainly cloudy with a chance for snow. Upper 30s
Wednesday: Mostly cloudy with scattered light snow chances. Near 40
Thursday: Partly sunny. Low 40s
Friday: Partly sunny. Low 40s
