How to spot a fake online review

Online sales are expected to grow by 12 percent this holiday season from last year. That means a lot of us will be shopping online over the next couple weeks.

But how do you know what you're buying online lives up to the promises? Turns out a lot of those online reviews we rely on are fake.

There are a few ways to spot a fake review.

First, Google a line in the review. If the same line is posted on another product review, it's fake.

If there are a high number of positive reviews posted in a short period of time, it's probably a fake review.

If the review is overly positive with no mention of anything wrong, it's most likely a member of the business pumping up their product.

And if the specific model number from the manufacturer is used specifically, it's a fake review.

Some online retailers are taking it upon themselves to make sure you know the customer leaving a review was an actual customer.

For example, Amazon.com now has the phrase "Amazon Verified Purchase" written underneath an online review.
