Source: Justice Dept. to investigate Cleveland police

CLEVELAND -- Sources tell Channel 3 News that the U.S. Attorney here in Cleveland is expected to announce at a news conference Thursday that the U.S. Justice Department plans to  investigate excessive force in the Cleveland Police Department.

The investigation is related to the November police pursuit and shooting in which Cleveland officers fired 137 bullets, killing an unarmed man and woman.

Since the beginning of the investigation, Cleveland Police Chief Michael McGrath and Mayor Frank Jackson said they would reach out to the U.S. Attorney's office for assistance.

Thursday's announcement is expected to be just that -- that the feds are granting the mayor's request to launch an investigation into excessive force.
