STEUBENVILLE -- There were opening statements just after the lunch hour in the rape trial of two Steubenville High School students in the Jefferson County Juvenile Court.

The two star football players are on trial for the rape of a 16-year-old Weirton girl.

The prosecution says this is not a case of the victim being forced but, instead, a case of a sexual assault on a young girl too intoxicated to make a choice,

The defense says 16-year-old Trent Mays and 17-year-old Ma'lik Richmond are innocent and that the prosecution can't prove its case.

Two teenage girls were witnesses for the prosecution and took the stand. Both were party guests last Aug. 11 when the alleged victim was assaulted.

The first girl testified that she and the accuser mixed vodka with blue slushi and that the alleged victim drank beer. She said the victim was loud, stumbling and her speech was slurred.

The witness says she was angry after seeing a photo sent to her cell phone that appeared as if the girl had been urinated upon.

The second witness described the alleged vicitm's demeanor and speech similarly but said she did not appear as if she was unconscious or that she didn't know what was going on.

At one point, the witness broke down and cried when describing the defendants' carrying her by her arms and legs outside. She added that the two are no longer friends.

Visiting Judge Thomas Lipps says court will continue until 5:30 p.m. tonight.
