AKRON -- Akron police, fire officials and dive team members responded to a major water main break in the area of North Valley and West Market Streets.
Officials still don't know the cause of 36 inch pipe bursting, but they believe it may have just been old.
Fire officials told Channel 3 News that the water has caused the foundations in some of the houses in the area to collapse. One home was completely destroyed.
The high levels of water forced rescue crews to evacuate people from their homes. The Red Cross is helping those families who are currently without a place to sleep.
Because of the water main break there is a boil alert in effect until further notice for West Akron residents who have experienced low water pressure. There is also a precautionary boil alert for people living in Fairlawn and Copley who are experiencing low water pressure. It is advised you boil you water for two minutes.
The water flow was finally stopped shortly after 9 o'clock PM. Constructions crews are expected in the area Friday morning to survey the damage.
No injuries are being reported.
