Police: Women outside just twice in 10 years; Castro charged

Written By kolimtiga on Kamis, 09 Mei 2013 | 17.04

Ariel Castro is one of three brothers arrested in the case.

CLEVELAND -- Police have announced charges in the disappearance of three Cleveland women and revealed the three were kept inside a home for nearly 10 years straight.

Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight escaped the home on Seymour Avenue on May 6.  Police say based on interviews the three only recall being allowed outside twice--for a short time--during their entire time in captivity.

In those two instances, police say the women were forced to wear disguises and only were taken from the house into the garage.  They never left the property.

Police say Ariel Castro has been charged in the women's disappearances.

Castro has been charged with four counts of kidnapping and three counts of rape. Investigators say the kidnapping charges are for Amanda, her daughter, Gina, and Michelle.  The rape charges involve Amanda, Gina and Michelle.

He's due in court tomorrow for an initial court appearance.

Deputy Police Chief Ed Tomba said a paternity test on Castro was being done to establish who fathered the now 6-year-old child of captive Amanda Berry.

His brothers Pedro and Onil Castro are not being charged in connection with the women's cases.  Police say they found no evidence linking them to the women or that they had any knowledge of what was going on.  Police say most of their investigation is based on interviews with Amanda, Gina and Michelle.

They are being held on outstanding warrants and are due in court tomorrow on those warrants.

Police say the three women knew the others were in the house but were not kept in the same location.

Police say ropes and chains were among evidence take from the house on Seymour Avenue.  A councilman says the three women were subjected to prolonged sexual and psychological abuse.

Amanda Berry's East Tenn. family remembers her childhood visits

The attention of the world has been focused on Cleveland, Ohio, this week, after three women who had been kidnapped more than a decade ago, were found alive.

One of those women, Amanda Berry, has ties to East Tennessee. Her father, grandfather, and other extended family members live in Elizabethton.

"Nobody believed it. It was unbelievable," said Troy Berry, Amanda's grandfather, "She never gave up."

They are, of course, thrilled that Amanda is alive, but the emotions are mixed. They worry about the ordeal that she's been through, and how she will recover.

"It's been crazy. Everybody's happy, emotional. [We're] crying still too. It's just unbelievable. This stuff doesn't happen after a decade, not with this outcome," said Amanda's first cousin, Crystal Milton.

John Berry, Amanda's father, has talked to his daughter twice since Monday, which he called the best day of his life. Both conversations lasted around 10 minutes, and we're full of "I love you's" and "can't wait to see you's."

John Berry is unable to travel right now, because he just had back surgery. He says if he was able, he'd be in Ohio right now. They are hoping Amanda can come visit him soon.

He says despite it all, he always knew he would see her again.

"Always. I always had hope. I never give up hope, no. I couldn't. I knew how good she was, how smart she was. If there was any way out of it, she'd find it. She had the nickname Commando. That's what I nicknamed her when she was little. She loved to fight with me and she was such as good kid. A tomboy, wasn't no pushover girl," said John Berry.

Her grandfather says Amanda always enjoyed visits to East Tennessee as a girl, and he can't wait for their reunion.

"She'd have stayed down here forever, you know, if we would have known, we would have let her but you never know," said Troy Berry.

"We went camping... and played hide and go seek. We were very close, like sisters because I never had a sister," said Milton, of Berry's visits to East Tennessee.

Now that her family has heard her voice and seen photos, they hope to see her for themselves.

Milton and Troy Berry said they hope to make a trip to Cleveland within the next few weeks.

Gina DeJesus home; gives crowd a thumbs-up

CLEVELAND -- Gina DeJesus, one of the three women who escaped years of captivity earlier this week, has returned home.

A huge crowd chanted her name as she arrived home under police escort.

Gina wearing a green hoodie gave the crowd a thumbs up as she was whisked into her family's home.

DeJesus had been held against her will inside a Seymour Avenue home with Amanda Berry and Michelle Knight.  Gina disappeared in April 2004 walking home from school.

Earlier Wednesday, Berry arrived at her sister's house where a large crowd offered cheers when the vehicle she was riding in pulled into the driveway.

Knight, meanwhile, was re-admitted to the hospital for undisclosed reasons where she's reportedly in good condition.

Three men have been arrested amid an investigation of the case.

Ariel Castro's family mortified to be related

CLEVELAND -- One of Ariel Castro's family members who have actually been to the Seymour Avenue home while the girls were being held captive says his entire family is mortified to be related to him.

Castro was charged with kidnapping and rape Wednesday.

"It's just crazy someone that you know could do this to someone you grew up with," a relative said.

He shares the Castro name, but is embarrassed to be related to the man accused of these horrific crimes. Especially when he knew one of the victims.

He has a message to all of them.

"That we're really sorry you girls had to endure this I knew Gina personally when I was younger and for her to go through this, ten years of her life is missing because of him it's just so sad."

When he got the news the girls were saved, he was elated. then, the second call came about who is suspected.

"I'm just in total shock that Ariel did this. My whole family is devastated that he did this."

"My family is just heartbroken from it all. We're trying to stay strong," he said. "Like the rest of the family said, no one knew about this if we would have known about this, these girls would have been saved years ago."

His message to the Castro that brought shame to the family name.

"You deserve it, you deserve everything coming. These girls didn't deserve this."

He wanted his identity withheld because his family now fears for their safety.

"Are you afraid of retribution from the community?

"I am [afraid of retribution from the community], I've heard people want revenge, but one man's mistake shouldn't be a burden on the entire family."

Cleveland: Charges expected Wednesday for Castro brothers

CLEVELAND -- Just before midnight Tuesday, Cleveland Police investigators, Cuyahoga County Sheriff's deputies and members of the FBI Evidence Response Team wrapped up a day of searching at Ariel Castro's home.

Investigators are expected to return Wednesday around 10 a.m.

Charges against the three suspects in the case are also expected.

Ariel Castro, Pedro Castro and Onil Castro will face local, state and possibly federal charges.

Authorities have 36 hours to file charges after an arrest, which would mean 6 a.m. Wednesday in this case.

Late Tuesday evening, that window was extended to 6 p.m. for charges to be filed against the suspects.

On Seymour Avenue, investigators spent hours combing through the home where Gina DeJesus, Amanda Berry and Michelle Knight were kept against their will for about a decade.

Bags of evidence were taken away, as well as two vehicles: A Jeep Cherokee and a pickup truck.

Investigators expect the search to take several days.

Police postponed interviewing the suspects until after the women would be interviewed.

Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight spent Tuesday speaking with investigators in a safe, secure location, out of the public eye that has turned its attention to their homes.

Cleveland: Story on missing women gains global interest

CLEVELAND -- The world is watching the story many are calling the #MiracleInCleveland.

News broke Monday night that three women -- Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michele Knight -- who were missing for years, were found alive after escaping a home at 2207 Seymour Avenue.

"This Cleveland story is truly astonishing," CNN's Piers Morgan posted on his Twitter page Monday evening. "THREE young women, all apparently kidnapped separate 10 yrs ago, found TOGETHER, and ALIVE."

Anderson Cooper, also of CNN, echoed Morgan's thoughts by tweeting: "Wow, brking news from Cleveland. 2 women who disappeared 9 and 10 years ago found alive in a house near where they were last seen."

Media outlets from around the world -- including Australia, England and Ireland -- have been calling the WKYC newsroom asking for extra details and requesting we do live reports.

Tuesday's edition of the "TODAY" show is expected to be live from Cleveland.

National news organizations like CNN have also made their way to town.

As you would expect, social media has been filled with interest in the story as #AmandaBerry, #GinaDeJesus and #MicheleKnight became top Twitter trends nationally and globally.

Here's what some of you had to say on the WKYC Facebook page:

- Connie: What a wonderful story about the 3 girls found. We've had so many heartbreaking stories this past year around the world. This is a miracle! Prayers to all of them and their families as they face the road ahead of them.

- Ruth: Cleveland makes national breaking news and it is good news. How cool is that! So happy for these families! Hope is an amazing thing and these moms never lost it! Moms always know!

- Darrell: I suggest a night of "WELCOME HOME" and "NEIGHBORHOOD SAFETY" should be held in honor of the three women found. This could be done by voluntarily turning on your porch light and standing out in your yard/on your porch, where you can greet your neighbor, say hello, and let each other know you are looking out for their best interest, as they look out for yours. We need to end the selfish behavior that society has caused us to form, and become the more neighborly and a sharing/caring Nation we once were.

- Monica: Great news today in Cleveland...miracles do happen

- Diane: Unbelievable! So happy for the families of these young women! Now let the healing begin for the young women!

- Michelle: Happy news in Cleveland tonight!!!!

- Marni: om gosh thank god prayers to them an joy an happiness to there family xoxoxoxox

- Pat: Wow! this story is astonishing! Not that far away. Maybe three miles away from where they disappeared? So happy to hear they are alive!

- Jen: Welcome home girls u were always thought of by many and in lots of prayers .

- Diamond: Knowing those girls are home safely with their families is better then Cleveland winning any Super Bowl, World Series or NBA Championship. Cleveland has finally brought home the biggest win ever!! God bless them!!!

- Tina: welcome home glad the lord kept you safe

- Paula: God is great! He put an Angel outside of that house when she was screaming for help. He could have turn the other cheek and thought to mind his own business but insted he went and did what he felt he needed to do. Mr. Ramsey from all of us in North East Ohio, thank you for becoming a HERO for these 3 women and children. MAY GOD BLESS YOU ALL AND ALL OF US THAT PRAYED FOR A SAFE RETURN HOME.

- Anita: Just goes to show you that God does hear our prayers and sometimes they are answered!! Wishing you girls and all love, peace and blessings. The best Mother's Day gifts ever!!

- Alisha: Thank you Jesus for the safe return of the three missing young women. God is so Good. The effectual fervent prayers of the righteous availeth much. Prayer works and changes things.

Suspect's son wrote about missing Gina DeJesus

CLEVELAND -- Ariel Castro, 52, was arrested Monday in Cleveland after three woman were found in his home on Seymour Avenue.

Castro's son brings another strange twist to already bizarre story that has spanned more than a decade and shook Cleveland's west side residents to their core.

After some investigation WKYC learned that the author was the son of the man arrested Monday in connection with the three women who were rescued from the home.

Ariel "Anthony" Castro, 31, talked to Sara Shookman tonight, saying "This is beyond comprehension...I'm truly stunned right now."

Anthony Castro said he was a journalism student at Bowling Green State University when he wrote the article in 2004.

His father Ariel Castro is in police custody tonight after a frantic 911 call led police to the three women and a six year old child. (READ MORE)

3 arrested, 3 missing women found in Cleveland home

CLEVELAND -- Cleveland's police chief says three brothers have been arrested after three women missing for years were found in a home and one said she'd been kidnapped.

Ariel Castro, 52, was among those arrested. Police have released no other names and given no details about the others arrested or what charges they might face.

Police source tells WKYC that police with search warrants are particularly concerned about the backyard because they believe there is some "disturbed soil" back there.

Police Chief Michael McGrath says a 6-year-old also was in the home. Dozens of police officers and sheriff's deputies remained at the scene late Monday awaiting a warrant to search the building.

Authorities say the women have been taken to Metrohealth Medical Center to reunite with relatives and seem to be in good health.

Michelle Knight had been missing since 2002, Amanda Berry since 2003 and Gina DeJesus since 2004. Berry and DeJesus disappeared when they were teenagers.

Canton: Timken crane accident kills 2

CANTON -- The Perry Township fire department and Stark County Coroner's Office responded to an industrial accident at the Timken Plant on Faircrest Street.

According to the Coroner's office, the incident happened around 12:50 p.m. and the two workers were declared dead at 1:20 p.m.

The two men, employees of Beaver Excavating, were working on a new caster construction site in the back of the plant.

They were rigging a load to be lifted off the ground when something caused the arm of the crane to malfunction and the crane collapsed, instantly killing Brian Black and Mark Tovissi.

OSHA officials have been contacted regarding the incident, according to Timken official Dan Minnich. All work on the site has been suspended until further notice.

This isn't the first time OSHA has paid a visit to Timken. This past December, the U.S. Labor Department fined Timken Co. over $170,000 after an inspection found 12 safety violations. Five of the violations were repeat offenses.

Since 2007, Timken has been cited by OSHA 27 times. Conversely, Beaver Excavating recieved a 1st place award just 2 months ago for excellence in safety.

North Olmsted: 15-year-old killed in overnight hit-skip

Written By kolimtiga on Sabtu, 04 Mei 2013 | 17.04

NORTH OLMSTED -- A 15-year-old North Olmsted High School student was killed in an overnight hit-skip traffic incident in North Olmsted.

The accident was reported on Brookpark Road, between Great Northern Boulevard and Columbia Road, around 11:30 p.m. Thursday.

Bruce-Malik Wayne Adams II, 15, of North Olmsted, was found in the eastbound lanes of Brookpark Road. The driver and car involved were not at the scene when police arrived.

A family friend tells Beres that Malik was returning a cell phone to Walmart when he was struck and killed.

Family members say Malik was wearing a dark shirt and red shorts when he was struck. Some shoppers and merchants complained that this stretch of Brookpark needs better, brighter street lighting.

Police say there is little doubt that the driver was aware of what happened.

North Olmsted Police Capt. Mike Kilbane said, "From the impact, yes, the driver would be aware something was struck."

Police and Malik's family and friends are urging the driver to turn himself in.

Family friend Larry Burkhalter Jr said, "Reveal yourself. It's the Godly thing to do. Turn yourself in...we should not be burying our kids. Our kids should be burying us."

Crimestoppers has offered a reward for information regarding this incident.

Kilbane is asking anyone with information or any witnesses to call police or Crimestoppers at 216-252-7463.

Administrators at NOHS had guidance counselors available to talk with students.

Brookpark Road was closed for a time overnight.

Local hat maker tops off outfits for Kentucky Derby

You could call Marta Glazen a connoisseur of chapeaus.

"A hat is so personal," she says. "It's very magical."

But, to be exact, Glazen is a milliner, someone who makes hats.

"I thought I was going to be a fashion designer," she explains.

She attended Virginia Marti College of Art and Design where she took a hat-making class and found her passion.

In 2007, Glazen opened a hat shop in Cleveland and has been helping women ever since top off outfits ever since.

"I'm lucky to say that, since I started six years ago, I've never been without a customer," Marta says while wearing a fashionable pink hat topped with a flower.

This time of year Glazen's customers are clamoring for show stoppers to wear on the biggest day of the year for hats: the Kentucky Derby.

Her store is stocked with handmade creations by Glazen herself and also hats she's found around the world.

"It's Christmas for me, the Derby, because people know I'm here. I have people that drive from Pennsylvania. I get people that e-mail me," she says. "I've become the place to go for the Derby because I pick out the hats that I know the women will wear."

And wearing a hat goes beyond making a fashion statement.

"You feel like a lady," Glazen says. "It shows that you're a confident person. I think every woman should put a hat on and feel confident."

Exclusive: Dash cam release in Middlefield police shooting

Middlefield -Police have released dramatic dash cam video of the shoot-out between officers and a suspect during a routine traffic stop.

On March 10, 2013 Officer Brandon Savage and Officer Erin Thomas pulled James L. Gil Gilkerson over while on patrol.

Before they could exit their cruiser, police say the man got out of his car and fired at the officers.

Officers then exited their cruiser and returned fire, killing Gilkerson.

Officer Thomas was shot in the hand. She was taken by a University Hospitals MedEvac helicopter to MetroHealth Medical Center.

Officer Savage was hit in the leg by shrapnel and was taken to University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center for treatment.

Both officers have since been released from the hospital.

Cleveland Weather: Veiled sunshine

Cirrus clouds are thin clouds high in the atmosphere that are comprised of ice crystals.

Sunlight can shine right through this "veil" of cloud cover, but those tiny ice crystals can act to reflect some of the sun's energy right back into space.  That means we don't get a full-power warming effect and the temperatures here on the earth's surface can be held back somewhat.

High, thin clouds will be with us for the next few days as an upper level storm system passes to our south.  As of today it looks like we'll be staying dry (with the exception of sprinkles) for the next week.

Tonight:  Some high clouds.  Pleasant, light breeze.  Low/mid 50s

Friday:  Veiled sunshine (high, thin clouds).  Still plenty warm and a bit breezy.  Mid 70s

Frontier adding charges to drinks, carry-on bags

Photo by Jeff Swensen, Getty Images.

Frontier Airlines is adding a fee for carry-on bags, and plans to start charging $2 for soda and coffee.

The new carry-on fee announced Wednesday will be $25 if paid in advance, and $100 if paid at the gate. It applies to bags in the overhead bin, so small bags under the seat will still be free.

Passengers who buy their tickets on the airline's website won't have to pay.

Frontier says the new fee will take effect this summer, and it will announce a specific date later.

The new drink fee begins July 1. Water will still be free.

Spirit Airlines Inc. began charging a carry-on fee three years ago.

Frontier's parent, Republic Airways Holdings Inc., is trying to fix Frontier's finances and sell it.

Ohio drones spark safety vs. privacy debate

CLEVELAND -- Surveillance and infrared cameras were keys to quickly spotting the Boston bombing suspects. Technology used for good, helped return security to a terrorized city.

But the pictures offer a reminder of how often we are watched. Are we sacrificing privacy for safety? It is a timely debate right here in Ohio.

New surveillance technology, in the form of domestic drones, is taking flight amid fears that it could go too far.

They are not the remote-control predator drones used to target and kill suspected terrorists abroad. These domestic drones are un-armed and a far cry from their military cousins.

But they are gaining popularity by police agencies across the country for what they can do: shoot real-time video and pick up body heat to locate people from above.

Medina County Sheriff Tom Miller has been leading the way to get a drone program off the ground. A drone his department is testing was donated as part of a pilot program to learn how it could be used by first responders.

"Let's say it's a moving shooter, somebody that's in the open, behind a barn. We could look ahead of there before inserting our teams and keep them safer, not to mention the public," Sheriff Miller explains.

The Medina County Sheriff's Department is one of five entities in Ohio authorized by the Federal Aviation Administration for limited drone use. Others include Ohio University, Lorain County Community College, Sinclair Community College near Dayton, and the Ohio Department of Transportation.

Miller also sees the drone as an excellent tool in missing person searches.

"Every year a couple of kids go missing in wooded areas. It can get up above the tree lines and, if there's a leaf cover, we can use the infrared and pick up a figure or a person in there and get to that person much sooner than we would through ordinary efforts of walking it or using canines," Miller said.

But as is often the case with progress, there are potential pitfalls too.

Surveillance technology has developed so rapidly that privacy laws have not kept up. Privacy laws have been tested in the past, with lawsuits over images from Google maps.

And now there are more questions and concerns about the recording capability of Google Glasses, set to go on sale to the public later this year.

"There's an expectation of privacy of individuals involved in not doing anything wrong. You and I walking down the street have a reasonable expectation of privacy," said Melissa Bilancini, a representative of the American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio.

"What we really want to do is ensure that policy created today will stand the test of technology," Bilancini added.

Miller says his department will not launch its drone until he can ensure people's right to privacy is protected.

"I don't want one flying over my backyard any more than anybody else does. And we are going to follow the guidelines of the Constitution of the United States, the guidelines of the State of Ohio. We will use a search warrant if and when appropriate."

But with the number of drones flying in national airspace expected to soar within the next few years, it is clear why drone debaters want resolution now, in the calm before the swarm.

Man who killed 6-month-old to be executed today

Steve Smith. (Photo: Ohio Department of Corrections)

LUCASVILLE, Ohio -- An Ohio death-row inmate who claims he didn't mean to kill the 6-month-old baby he raped almost 15 years ago is set to be executed.

Steve Smith is scheduled to be executed by lethal injection at the state prison in Lucasville at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

The 46-year-old was convicted of aggravated murder in the September 1998 killing of his live-in girlfriend's infant daughter, Autumn Carter.

Smith had tried to get his sentence reduced to life in prison, arguing that he was too drunk to realize that his assault was killing Autumn.

The Ohio Parole Board and Gov. John Kasich unanimously turned him down.

Smith will become the 51st inmate put to death in Ohio since it resumed executions in 1999.

His family and Autumn's family plan to witness the execution.

New lower age requirement for "morning-after" pill

CLEVELAND -- On Tuesday, the Food and Drug Administration announced the Plan B "morning-after" pill would be made available to girls 15 and older without a prescription.

The decision came on the heels of a federal ruling earlier this month, in which U.S. District Judge Edward Korman of New York ruled there should be no age restrictions on emergency contraceptives.

For years now, the morning after pill has been a polarizing topic much like any other involving woman's reproductive rights, which made Tuesday's FDA decision a hot-button topic for people on both sides of the issue.

"Our children at 15, they're not really adults, so I think that that's too much of a choice for them to make," said Carol Hinnant of Cleveland. "It's very alarming, then we force our children to take on the guise of being an adult and they're not ready for that."

However, access and choices are what Cleveland Heights resident Beth Gehring believes every woman, no matter her age, has a right to.

"I'm really in favor of choice and I'm really in favor of choice for everybody. I think that the FDA decision is a little tricky, but I do think it puts the onus on parents to be more responsible."
