Cuyahoga Co: Resources for at-risk mothers

CLEVELAND-- In light of 3-year-old Emilliano Terry's death, non-profits who work with at-risk mothers and fathers want more parents to know that resources are out there.

Merrick House in Tremont provides multiple levels of care for families on the West Side.

Everything from child care to GED classes and parenting seminars are held at the non-profit on Starkweather, which has been in operation since 1919.

One of the most important programs at Merrick House is a partnership with MomsFirst.

MomsFirst is a program through the Cleveland Department of Health providing free services to expectant mothers.

The services are free, and the only qualifications are that the participant live in Cleveland qualify for assistance (whether that be transportation, housing, health care, etc.).

Merrick House Executive Director Kathy Marsh has seen many success stories of MomsFirst.

"This program allows the workers to go out to the home and work one on one with these at-risk, pregnant women. Whether it's their first pregnancy, second or third, it doesn't matter," Marsh said.

MomsFirst operates at nine locations in Cleveland.

The case workers from Merrick House assist 175 mothers, but Marsh says, they actively have to recruit more people to participate. Sometimes that means going to area hospitals and working directly with Children and Family Services.

"We are constantly trying to find people and let them know," Marsh said.

She says, with mothers like Camilia Terry who are transitioning out of the foster care system, help like this can be vital.

"These [women] go right from the system, counting on some kind of assistance, and now they have to find housing.  Once they get it, are they equipped to do everything on their own?" Marsh said.

She wishes Merrick House and MomsFirst had been able to reach Camilia Terry.

"It wasn't like anybody was not working with her. But obviously she needed that one step, that might have stopped [her son's death] from happening," Marsh said.

Here are more resources for at-risk parents in the Greater Cleveland area:

Lottery winners not always as lucky in personal lives

Written by
WKYC Web Staff

CLEVELAND -- The $500 million jackpot has a lot of people dreaming, but the story of some lottery winners warn to be careful what you wish for.

Some winners' stories are good examples that money can't buy happiness, and the experts agree.

"I think Henry Ford said money doesn't change a person, it simply unmasks them," said Michael Boone, president of MWBoone & Associates.

They say money doesn't make the man. And some Lotto winners agree. Only about half of lottery winners are happier three years after hitting big, according to Michael Boone, whose Seattle firm advises big lotto winners.

So people have an opportunity to do all the things they dreamed about, sometimes those are good things and sometimes not," Boone said.

Around Christmas of 2002, Jack Whittaker, of West Virginia, had the only winning ticket i the $314 million lottery jackpot.

Two years later, his wife said that she wishes she had torn up the ticket. Their lives were in shambles.

Their 17-year-old granddaughter died after struggling with drug addiction. Whittaker himself was arrested twice for drunken driving.

Abraham Shakespeare, of Florida, was murdered after winning $31 million.

Then there's Amanda Clayton, a young mother who won $1 million in the Michigan lottery. She made headlines when she continued to collect food stamps.

She was found dead of an apparent drug overdose.

Are these winners unlucky or is there something more to it?

Psychologist Alduan Tartt says big payouts can isolate people and thrust them into a world of wealth that is foreign to them.

There's a funny thing about money and happiness that not everyone knows about.

"You win the lottery and spend a lot of money. What happens is, you get used to having a lot of money and spending a lot of money," Tartt says. "So what happens is, you actually have to spend more money to get the same level of happiness."

What about lottery winners who do end up happy?

Their secret, experts say, is that they don't lose their sense of self and they successfully separate their identity from their money.

Written by
WKYC Web Staff

CLEVELAND -- The mother of 3-year-old Emilliano Terry, Camilia Terry, who reported him missing early Sunday evening, remains in police custody Tuesday.

She is not charged with any crime but police say their search for Emilliano went in a different direction after her statements early Monday afternoon became "inconsistent."

Camilia Terry, now 20, does not have a police record but was recently released from foster care and Channel 3 has learned that she had her first child at age 14, then had two others.

She has posted multiple videos of herself on YouTube -- many of which showcase her singing.

In one of the YouTube videos, she says she's 18 and wants to go to college and then become a lawyer, saying she has been writing songs since she was 10, singing songs since she was 5.

Some of the YouTube videos are entitled "I'll make it," "Need a Friend," "Me as Me"," "Camilia Terry" and others.

There are also multiple songs attributed to Camilia Terry posted on reverbnation.com. Some of the song titles are "Burning Inside", "Forever" and "Filled With Ivy."

Police: Missing 3-year-old found dead in trash bag

Written By kolimtiga on Selasa, 27 November 2012 | 17.05

CLEVELAND -- Police say the body of missing 3-year-old Cleveland boy Emiliano Terry was found in trash bags at the Waste Management recycling center in Oakwood.

During a 9:45 p.m. press conference Monday at the Justice Center, police said they have arrested Emiliano's mother, Camilia, and she is being held in jail.

The discovery of Emiliano's body was made about 4 p.m. Monday. The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office will perform an autopsy Tuesday morning to determine the cause of death.

Camilia Terry's other two children are now in the custody of Cuyahoga County Children & Family Services.

Police say they became suspicious of 20-year-old Camilia Terry's statements when they became "inconsistent" earlier Monday.

As the FBI evidence team was searching the streets around Terry's apartment near East 130th Street and Broadway Avenue about 2 p.m. Monday, they noticed a Waste Management truck picking up recycling containers and recyclables.

They contacted Waste Management after getting the number of the truck and asked that the truck be held at the Oakwood facility until they could arrive.

Once they arrived, they had the truck dump its load inside the facility and began searching through the bags. They found the body double-bagged after opening several bags.

Police were asked if they knew when Emiliano had been killed and they said that the Medical Examiner's Office would make the determination Tuesday as to how long Emiliano had been dead.

Police said the investigation is now in the hands of the Cleveland Police Homicide Unit and they will be meeting with the prosecutor's office Tuesday morning to determine the charges against Camilia Terry.

Cleveland Weather: Oh no! Lake snow!

Written By kolimtiga on Sabtu, 24 November 2012 | 17.04

Cold air flowing over the warmer waters of the Great Lakes.

That is the simple explanation of lake effect, which is a wind driven event.  The wind direction arrows will point to where the snow will go, and in this case - right into the heart of the snowbelt.

We are looking at 2" to 5" of accumulation for the primary snowbelt areas in eastern Cuyahoga, far southern Lake, northern Geauga, northern Trumbull counties, and most all of Ashtabula county.  These are the areas with the Lake Snow Advisory through early Sunday morning.

For Lorain, western and southern Cuyahoga, Medina, Summit and Portage counties (secondary snowbelt) expect less than 2" of accumulation.

Otherwise it will be cloudy, cold and windy.  Wind chills will drop into the 20s and likely stay there for Saturday, since the temperatures won't be leaving the middle 30s.

The lake snow may linger into early Sunday before ending.  Mostly cloudy to partly sunny skies will then rule.

Still watching a storm system for Tuesday...might be snow or could be nothing at all.  Let's get through this weekend first.

Tonight:  Scattered lake snow, otherwise cloudy, windy and cold.  Upper 20s/low 30s

Saturday:  Scattered lake snow.  Mainly cloudy.  Breezy and cold.  Mid 30s

Sunday:  Early flurries may linger north, otherwise mostly cloudy to partly sunny.  Breezy.  Upper 30s/near 40

Monday:  Early sun giving way to clouds and then a chance for showers later in the day.  Near 40

Tuesday:  Mainly cloudy with a chance for snow.  Upper 30s

Wednesday:  Mostly cloudy with scattered light snow chances.  Near 40

Thursday:  Partly sunny.  Low 40s

Friday:  Partly sunny.  Low 40s

ODOT ready for first real blast of winter weather

The Ohio Department of Transportation District 12 will have crews out this evening and through the morning or later, as needed, in Cuyahoga, Lake and Geauga counties as a result of forecasted temperatures and lake effect snow.

ODOT District 12 will be staffed as follows:

  • Cuyahoga County -- 19 snowplows will be on the roads tonight as needed.  After midnight, a crew of 29 snowplows will be on the roads through the morning or later as needed.
  • Lake County -- 9 snowplows will be on the roads tonight as needed.  After midnight, a crew of 13 snowplows will be on the roads through the morning or later as needed.
  • Geauga County - 8 snowplows will be on the roads tonight as needed.  After midnight, a crew of 13 snowplows will be on the roads through the morning or later as needed.

ODOT's trucks have passed 150-point inspections to ensure that the plows are ready for battle.

ODOT will make history this winter by being the first state in the nation to use green-colored strobe lights on its snowplow trucks. Studies show green lights are more easily detected by the human eye than other colors.

The new green lights, along with new white lights, will be added to the existing amber lights creating a color combination unique to ODOT.

Buckeyes-Michigan: The 'Clash for Cash'

Written by
WKYC Web Staff

WESTLAKE -- Dick's Sporting Goods at Crocker Park in Westlake turned from Black Friday to 'Scarlet and Gray Day.'

The Buckeyes section of souvenirs was filled with shoppers getting ready for the game against Michigan.

Eliscia Wisner is going to her first Ohio State-Michigan game, so she wants to be dressed for the part and stay warm.

Even when the weather is frightful, Jake Donato finds his Buckeye shorts delightful. But even he is looking for a new buckeyes hoodie to keep warm for the game.

To Jake, the Ohio State-Michigan game is like a holiday.

And Saturday's game is about more than touchdowns and field goals, but also dollars and cents. WKYC's John Anderson breaks it down for you.

A home game for the Buckeyes is worth about $3 million to the university.

Here's an inside look at the Buckeyes budget according to Forbes magazine:

For 2011-2012, revenue for the Ohio State football team is $48 million.. For the 35 other sports combined? $18 million.

The Buckeyes are perfect this year on the field, but will suffer an estimated loss of $2.2 million in bowl revenue due to NCAA sanctions.

But along with all this scarlet and gray, businesses will keep seeing green.

Need a ticket for the game? Ohio-State Michigan is still the hot seat.  We found tickets on Stub Hub going for as high as $950 each.

This game is about cash...and confidence.

Cleveland Weather: Oh no! Lake snow!

'Black Friday' started Thursday at Toys-R-Us

UH testing female version of Viagra

CLEVELAND -- University Hospitals is leading an international trial investigating a first-of-its-kind on-demand drug for pre-menopausal women with sexual dysfunction.

Sheryl Kingsberg, PhD says this international Phase II study is one of the largest clinical studies to ever explore a "use-as-needed" treatment, Tefina, for women experiencing orgasmic disorder.

Tefina is a nasal gel containing testosterone and is inserted in the nose with an easy to use applicator 1-4 hours before sexual activity. The study, which will involve 240 patients in the U.S., Canada and Australia, will evaluate if there is an increase in the occurrence of orgasm over the treatment period, compared against baseline levels.

Anorgasmia, also known as female orgasmic disorder, is defined as the persistent or recurrent delay in or absence of orgasm. Although this condition affects 1 in 5 women worldwide, there are no approved treatments for anorgasmia.

Low testosterone is linked to low sexual desire and the development of climax problems. Testosterone therapy not only improves sexual desire through central actions in the brain but also results in increased vaginal blood flow, which is critical for sexual satisfaction.

Participants must be aged 18 to 49 and be unable to be sexually satisfied after previously having had no problems.  For more information, call 440.995.3810.
