Ohio man raises money for kids after parents killed

CINCINNATI -- An Ohio man is raising money to help four kids he'll probably never meet.

Sometimes we just feel called upon to act. That moment came last week for Brian Morris of Springboro.

He was reading a couple different news stories and one hit him on Christmas Eve: Parents die, four children orphaned.

Last Sunday, a wrong way driver crashed into a van on Interstate 75 in Warren County. Killed instantly were Joshua Nkansah, his 7-year-old son David, and 31-year-old Michele Barhorst, who was in the minivan with her family. Her husband, 37-year-old Scott Barhorst, died later at a hospital. The couple's 9-year-old daughter was the most seriously hurt of their children, but she survived.

The family was on the way to visit relatives for Christmas.

Morris knew he had to do something. "I decided to do this because I have two daughters of my own. I can only imagine, if something were to happen to me, I can only hope that someone would help me out the way I'm trying to help these kids out."

With the help of a friend, he set up a We Pay account online to collect donations for the children. The secure site allows you to see the donations made and by whom.

"What I want people to do is to reach into their heart and forget that five dollars they spend on something pointless and donate 5, 10, 15, however much they can to this cause to try and help these kids out. Because I really want to help them create new memories, do great things."

In just two days the account has raised nearly five thousand dollars, but Morris says it's about more than the money.

"I've never met them, I probably never will meet them. And what it comes down to is it doesn't matter, because if you're helping each other out, that's what we're all here to do. And that's exactly what I want to do in this situation."

Report: Browns expected to fire head coach and GM

Written by
WKYC Web Staff

Pittsburgh -- The Browns are expected to fire Head Coach Pat Shurmur and General Manager Tom Heckert after Sunday's game in Pittsburgh.  Voice of the Browns Jim Donovan reports from Pittsburgh that the players meeting for Monday afternoon has been moved up to Monday morning, causing speculation that the Browns new ownership group is ready to make the changes come Monday.

Shurmur has spent two seasons with the Browns.  He has a record of 9-22, including a mark of 2-9 against divisional opponents.  Shurmur also admitted this week during his news conference that the team has not won enough games during his stay here in Cleveland.

Jim Donovan reports a strong candidate to replace Shurmur is Indianapolis Colts Offensive Coordinator Bruce Arians.  Arians has guided the Colts offense and rookie quarterback Andrew Luck into the playoffs.  He was also offensive coordinator with the Browns during the Butch Davis era.

Jimmy also says another candidate is Arizona Cardinals Defensive Coordinator Ray Horton.  Horton has been an NFL assistant coach for 18 years including a stop with the Steelers during 2004-2010.

Flying high: Akron-Canton airport breaks record

NORTH CANTON -- The deals are always flying by at Akron Canton Airport. Now more than ever, people are taking notice.

For the past three years, they've continued to break their own records on the amount of customers serviced.  Business is up 11 percent from last year.

Cleveland native Jennifer Johnson flies CAK.

"It's smaller but you can get through everything a lot quicker than Cleveland Hopkins," said Johnson. "Once AirTran started docking its station ,that's when I started going."

Turns out, a lot of people are getting to where they want to go from Akron Canton.

The 11 percent increase in traffic is greatly attributed to their low fares.

"Our average fare is $100 less than Hopkins, maybe $40 to $50 less than from Pittsburgh or Columbus," said VP of Marketing Kristie VanAuken.

For passenger Bradley Lemmon, it's all about convenience.

"This is closer, shorter drive... we walked all the way in, checked our bags ready for our flight," said Lemmon.

This year, about 1.8 million customers have flown in and out. Their traffic alone has sustained and created jobs throughout the hub.

For instance, Southwest Airlines "jumped from about 40 employees to 75, so nearly a 100 percent increase for people for Southwest Airlines here," VanAuken said.

Cleveland Weather: Snow moving in

A storm system passing to our south this morning is producing snow showers, light to moderate, across our area this morning.

We will likely see anywhere from 1 to 4 inches of snow across the area from this storm, with the heaviest snow south. It will be make for some slick and slippery road conditions at times.

A winter weather advisory has been issued by the National Weather Service office in Pittsburgh for Tuscarawas and Carroll counties.

There are currently no advisories for the rest of northern Ohio, which is covered by the NWS office in Cleveland because in order to meet the criteria for a winter weather advisory, 4" of snow needs to fall in 12 hours ... we'll be just below that.

The snow will taper off in the early afternoon, but then lake effect sets up for the snowbelts.  Another 2" to 4" is possible overnight Saturday into Sunday (heaviest accumulations will happen if we can get some bands set up).

Scattered snow, courtesy of the Lake, will continue into early Sunday before dissipating.  Otherwise Sunday looks lovely ... good day to visit the local ski slopes, toboggan shoots, cross-country skiing trails and the car wash!

The last day of 2012 (Monday) starts off fine and dandy, but later in the day snow will develop.  That snow is expected to stay with us for the start of 2013.

Much colder air will be coming our way next week.

Saturday: Cloudy with snow showers likely.  1" to 4" for the entire area.  Low 30s (additional lake effect snow Saturday night in the belts)

Sunday: Flurries linger east, otherwise partly sunny. Near 30

Monday: Partly sunny. Snow showers develop late.  Low 30s

New Year's Day: Cloudy with snow showers likely. Upper 20s

Wednesday: Partly sunny. Mid/upper 20s

Thursday:  Mostly cloudy with scattered snow showers. Cold and windy. Mid 20s

Friday:  Very cold with a chance for lake effect snow showers east.  Highs only near 20!

That total amounts to about 18 to 19 people.

It is unclear where in the department those cuts will come from. More details should be available over the course of the day Friday.

There is no official word on when the cuts will take effect, but it is believed any layoffs would be implemented after Jan. 1, 2013.

Still, not a major storm, but something to keep an eye on.

Enjoy your morning.

It is unclear where in the department those cuts will come from. More details should be available over the course of the day Friday.

There is no official word on when the cuts will take effect, but it is believed any layoffs would be implemented after Jan. 1, 2013.

Investigator: City jail guard linked to drugs

CLEVELAND -- A city corrections officer who is living with a career criminal failed a drug test administered after she got into an accident while transporting inmates in a jail van in January, public records show.

Officer Jennifer Korb was suspended without pay for 15 days for testing positive for drugs, according to personnel records obtained under the Ohio Public Records Act.

A Channel 3 News investigation found that Korb is living with Tracy Bunch, a career criminal who has racked up 20 convictions since 1980.

Bunch is currently on probation for weapons and aggravated menacing charges that were filed after police say he shot at a man and then threatened to kill a police officer this July. During the sentencing, Korb stood up for Bunch during the hearing.

A friend of Bunch, however, told the station that there is more to the relationship.

"Tracy tells me he sells drugs with her," said Shirley Woolfolk of Cleveland. "That's per his mouth - verbatim."

Woolfolk and Bunch were not available for comment.  Attempts to reach them at Korb's Warrensville Heights home were not successful, and she did not return a call after a reporter left a card in Korb's mailbox explaining the allegations.

Korb previously refused to answer questions about her relationship with Bunch, telling the Investigator Tom Meyer, "Do you think you should be here bothering a hard working city worker that has put in her full eight hours today?"

Bunch and Woolfolk have had a tumultuous relationship, she said. They previously lived together and police reports indicate she has accused him multiple times of domestic abuse. But the two are still friendly and Bunch still visits her home, she said.

Woolfolk said Bunch met Korb more than a year ago at the Cleveland House of Corrections.

"He was an inmate," Woolfolk said. "Tracy's a beguiling type of person. He knows how to pull people into his mess."

Bunch has also twice used his relationship with Korb to threaten Woolfolk, according to police reports. One of the police reports quote Bunch as saying he's "with the police now and she's gonna (expletive) you up, too."

"I'm not the only one he's said this to," Woolfolk said. Bunch and Korb's relationship "gave him power on Kinsman (Avenue in Cleveland). It made him more credible."

Korb has also gotten into the act, calling a supervisor where Woolfolk works, she said.

"It wasn't pleasant, what my supervisor said," according to Woolfolk."

Cleveland does not prohibit corrections officers from dating or living with a convict. The city does have a policy prohibiting illegal or inappropriate activity.

Acting Corrections Commissioner David Carroll reviewed a prior Channel 3 News story on Korb's relationship with Bunch and found that it did not violate any city rules.

When asked about the current allegations, Carroll said he would investigate any credible complaints involving possible illegal activity. But he said that at this point Woolfolk's allegations simply amount to hearsay evidence.

Carroll also said Korb has filed police reports against a "woman" for harassment, but he didn't name that person.

TSO fans upset over weather, show offers solutions

CLEVELAND -- Wednesday's winter blast had a lot of people grunting and grumbling over the snowy white. Over at Quicken Loans Arena, there was more of the same.

Despite the steady snowfall, the Trans-Siberian-Orchestra concert went on. And a lot of people weren't too thrilled that the show wasn't cancelled or rescheduled altogether.

Early in the day, ticket holders thought there were only two options: Let the tickets go to waste or brave the winter storm to make the show.

It turns out, the Trans-Siberian Orchestra is offering alternatives to fans, making up for the unsafe weather Wednesday.

Fans with an unused Cleveland ticket have the option to exchange their tickets for the following performances:

• Detroit THIS Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012 (3 p.m. and 8 p.m.)
• Columbus THIS Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012 (3 p.m. and 8 p.m.)
• Or fans can wait until next year and redeem their tickets to any show on the 2013 Winter Tour, including Cleveland's 2013 shows (with a date to be determined).

To sign up and redeem the offer, email The Q at contactus@cavs.com with your name, email and a phone number and a staff member will contact you as soon as possible. Tickets to the Detroit and Columbus shows are subject to availability.

All tickets redeemed for the 2013 shows must sign up to redeem by Jan. 31 2013 and will be guaranteed a ticket in the same price level as they originally purchased.

However, most fans didn't know about this offer before the show.

For Carmine DiGiulio, tickets to the orchestra were Christmas gifts.

"My mom and dad were supposed to come but didn't want to brave the weather, I guess," said DiGiulio.

Most of the day, the freeways were covered in snow, making it difficult to see one lane from the next. There was a lot of snow and a lot of slow.

"It was like 45 mph the whole way, that was fast enough, it was pretty treacherous out there," said DiGiulio.

Those who made it downtown weren't out of the thick of it. We saw one car being pushed into a parking lot after it became stuck in the street.

"A lot of people complaining," said Christine DiGiulio, who lost out on money she spent for the show.

"I purchased tickets on Stub Hub for $270 then got flash seats also... can't get that money back and then I lost the hotel room, pretty bad," said Christine.

Cleveland Weather: Wicked Wednesday

Merry Christmas!

A BLIZZARD WARNING has been issued for:  Lakeshore Ashtabula, Lake, Cuyahoga, Lorain, Erie, Huron, Sandusky and Ottawa counties from 11AM Wednesday to 7AM Thursday.  (Blizzard warning criteria are: wind greater than 35mph and visibility less than 1/4 mile for 3 or more hours.)

A WINTER STORM WARNING goes into effect for the rest of northern Ohio from 7AM Wednesday to 7AM Thursday.

PLEASE - Don't get caught up in the technicalities of a blizzard warning versus a winter storm warning. ALL of northern Ohio will have a nasty day Wednesday.  The wind will be a little higher in the blizzard warning areas and visibilities may be consistently lower, but we will have very tough driving conditions across all of our counties.

Here is the set-up:  A powerful winter storm system will move from the deep south to the New England/Mid-Atlantic coast.  As the storm moves northeast, a swath of very heavy snow will move into northern Ohio from the south.  It will also be quite windy.

The snow will start across northern Ohio by midday Wednesday.  A steady moderate to heavy snow will persist through the afternoon with very heavy, steady snow continuing in the late afternoon through evening.

When combined with the brisk wind, blizzard conditions are possible in all areas, but most likely in the blizzard warning area.

6" to 10" of snow will fall across ALL of northern Ohio through the day and evening.  An additional 2" to 5" will fall Wednesday night before the snow cuts down to light showers and flurries early Thursday morning.

Storm totals by midday Thursday will be 8" to 12" with the possibility of up to 15" of snow.

This will be a constantly evolving situation.

Things to remember:

- The snow will be wet and heavy, so use caution if shoveling.

- Driving will be extremely difficult.

-If driving south along I-71, expect heavy snow the entire drive through Cincinnati.

-If driving west on I-80/90, expect heavy snow showers in much of northern Ohio...tapering off to flurries and light snow in Indiana and Michigan.

-If driving south on I-77 or east on I-80/76, expect snow to change over to a wintry mix.

-If driving east on I-90 toward Buffalo, expect snow, but leaving earlier rather than later is a good idea.

- The airports will have problems with arrivals and departures.  So will other regional airports in Columbus and Pittsburgh.

-Bring in the pets and secure outdoor buildings and items.

-Consider telling your kids to wear bike helmets while sledding, tubing and/or skiing or snowboarding.

Here is a look at the rest of the forecast:

Thursday:  Scattered light snow showers.  Breezy.  Near 30

Friday:  Partly sunny.  Near 30

Saturday:  Mostly cloudy with snow likely.  Low 30s

Sunday:  Early snow showers linger, then partly cloudy.  Near 30

Monday:  Partly cloudy early, then scattered snow later.  Upper 30s

New Year's Day:  Mostly cloudy with scattered snow showers.  Upper 20s

Preparing for blizzard-like weather conditions

CUYAHOGA COUNTY -- Many people spent their Christmas Day getting ready for the winter storm expected to hit Dec. 26.

The Ohio Department of Transportation began readying crews for a big snow storm expected to hit Wednesday.

ODOT says 53 plows from Cuyahoga County deployed at 11 p.m. Tuesday night.

Another 14 plows from Lake and 13 plows from Geauga counties will join the road preparations at 4 a.m.

The worst of the road conditions are expected to be after the Wednesday morning rush hour.

ODOT advises drivers to know what they're heading out into before leaving home, and to be prepared for bad weather.

It's also important to take it slow and give plow trucks at least 75 feet of clearance to lay salt and brine.

Around town, many people tried to find a convenience store or drug store open on Christmas Day.

Batteries, water, ice and snow shovels and scrapers were sold, in addition to food.

Most people say they just want to be comfortable at home in case it's too risky to drive on Wednesday.

Burton: Multiple fire departments battle house fire

Written by
WKYC Web Staff

BURTON, Ohio -- Crews from multiple fire departments have been called to a structure fire on Park Way.

The fire started just after 8:30 p.m. It's not clear whether the home was occupied or not.

Due to the location of the structure, fire crews are having a hard time getting water and equipment close enough to battle the blaze.

Fire crews from as far away as Streetsboro have been called to help.

Some of the other departments that responded are Burton, Newbury, Chardon, Middlefield, Troy Township, Aurora, Auburn and Chagrin Falls.

State Route 87 was closed in both directions between Burton Circle and State Route 44 while fire crews cleared the area. After about 20 minutes, highway patrol reopened the road.

Malls packed with last-minute holiday shoppers

Written by
WKYC Web Staff

STRONGSVILLE -- On the final weekend of shopping before Christmas, crowds continue to grow and stores are packed.

Some people say shopping at the last minute is actually a strategic decision. They say you're still able to get good deals, and it's nothing like the crowds you see on Black Friday.

Shoppers are crowding more than just storefronts. Roads in the area surrounding the mall have been gridlocked with people trying to get in and out of the stores nearby.

Southpark Mall has extended hours and will remain open until 11 p.m. Some department stores, including Macy's, will stay open through the night to give shoppers a chance to find the perfect gift.

Other stores are open for longer periods of time. Toys R Us will stay open for 88 hours straight, closing its doors at 10:00 p.m. on Christmas Eve.

Cleveland Weather: More to come...

Winter Storm Warning for Cuyahoga, Lake, Geauga, and Ashtabula counties until 7 pm Saturday.

Winter Weather Advisory for Erie, Huron, Richland, Ashland, and Holmes counties through 7PM TONIGHT.

Winter Weather Advisory for Lorain, Medina, Portage, Trumbull, Wayne, and Stark counties through 1PM Saturday.

The snow is still coming down and while accumulations have been a little sluggish (thanks to warm ground and temperatures hovering near freezing) we have our first accumulations of the season for most areas.

Slowly but surely the storm system will be pulling away to the northeast and the wind field behind the storm will turn away from a favorable lake effect fetch.  This means the snow will be shifting east tonight and tapering off tomorrow.

Total accumulations for most of the area will still reach the 2" to 4" range, with the lakeshore and near-lakeshore areas getting less and the snowbelt getting more (4" to 8").

The WIND is still going to be a big factor.  The gusts have been over 40mph through the day and will continue tonight.

By Sunday it all settles down and we get some sunshine.  This may end up being the end of our white Christmas chances for areas that don't get a lot of snow.

But wait...

Just as we begin to lose hope...a sneaky little storm system will bring us some snow Christmas Eve.  We could have a mix of rain, snow, and possibly freezing rain, but I think the snow will win out and a fresh, light coating of snow will be here for Christmas morning.

...and then comes the post-Christmas storm.

This one certainly bears watching.  A potent system is expected to stir up in the deep south on and move northward Wednesday and Thursday.  If the track holds and the temperature pattern forecast remains the same, we could be looking at some significant snow (6"+) for much of the area.

Tonight:  Snow continues.  Accumulations of 1" to 2" for most areas with 2" to 5" additional inches in the snowbelt possible.  Mostly cloudy otherwise and windy.  Upper 20s (wind chills in teens)

Saturday:  Early snow showers east will taper off.  Partly sunny.  Low/mid 30s

Sunday:  Partly cloudy to mostly sunny!  Mid 30s

Monday:  Increasing clouds with snow showers moving in.  A wintry mix is possible at times.  Mid 30s

Christmas Day:  Partly cloudy.  Low/mid 30s

Wednesday:  Cloudy with snow showers developing.  Snow could be heavy at times, especially later in the day.  Breezy.  Low 30s

Thursday:  Snow continues early, then tapers off.  Partly cloudy late.  Near 30

Friday:  Mostly sunny.  Low 30s

Geauga County: Dozens of accidents keep deputies busy

GEAUGA COUNTY -- The Geauga County Sheriff's Office stayed busy Friday night, as snow pummeled this typical snowbelt county.

"It's everything. People getting stuck. Going too quick. Sliding off into a ditch," said Deputy Jeff Raymond, who is on duty until 5 a.m. Saturday morning.

His patrol car computer glowed with the red and green lights of over 50 accidents Friday evening.

Many of the crashes Raymond attributes to drivers going too fast on hilly, curvy roads, or not having the proper tires to handle the conditions.

On an incline on state Route 87, a semi truck driver says he was forced to hit his brakes when a car in front of him slowed to 5 mph.

Once the semi stopped, he couldn't get it going again. Deputies arrived on the scene to divert traffic, since drivers who tried to pass the semi would have had to travel into an oncoming lane.

Soon ODOT crews arrived to salt the road around the tires of the big rig. Gary, the truck driver, says he appreciated the response from deputies while he waited.

"Kept a bad situation from getting worse," Gary said.

On state Route 422, Amanda Coombs spun into a ditch when a car tried to merge onto the highway and cut her off.

"I've been here for an hour," said Coombs, a Navy sailor on leave from Virginia Beach.

Deputy Raymond arrived and set up flashing lights around her car until a tow vehicle could get there.

"I'm glad (Raymond) did, and that I had someone to check and make sure I was okay. The weather is just horrible out here," Coombs said.

Public workers are here to help, but want to remind people to take it slow, and leave early. These are dangerous conditions for recklessness.

Smart salting plan equals savings for towns

MORELAND HILLS, Ohio -- The public service department in the Village of Moreland Hills knows a thing or two about taking care of snowy, icy roads.

Once the snow begins piling up Friday, the town's truck drivers will plow and salt 78 miles of road lanes; much of it hilly, curvy terrain.

Three years ago, Moreland Hills and several other Cuyahoga County towns implemented a "smart salting" plan to save on the thousands of tons of industrial salt used to treat the roads each year.

Some of the steps they take include:

• Minimizing crews between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m.

• Calibrating equipment so the precise amount of salt is used

• Pretreating roads with a brine of beet juice or liquid magnesium chloride

• Focusing on the main roads, leaving side streets to the end of the process

The Moreland Hills Service Director says smart salting practices have saved about 1,000 tons of salt each year, reducing the overall amount needed by one-third.

With salt prices hovering just below $40, that equals thousands of dollars in savings each year.

City officials want to remind drivers: Give salt and plow trucks 75 feet of space in front of you, and never pull out in front of a truck because you are in a hurry.
