Chagrin Falls: Storm damage detours firefighters

Written by
WKYC Web Staff

CHAGRIN FALLS -- Road closures caused by the recent storm damage slowed fire crews as they raced to a garage fire in Chagrin Falls overnight.

The fire on County Line Road was reported at about 2:30 Wednesday morning.

It started when the homeowner ran his generator inside of the garage, catching the garage on fire, officials said.

Investigators are ruling the fire accidental and nobody was injured.

Road closures along Fairmount Road, among others, forced fire crews to take detours, slowing their arrival time by about 10 minutes, officials said.

CLEVELAND -- Schools and offices in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District will reopen on Wednesday, but 23 CMSD schools without power will remain closed:

Oliver Hazard Perry

Orchard @Halle

Patrick Henry

CEO Eric Gordon said he realizes schools district-wide are likely to have lower attendance than normal Wednesday as many homes throughout the city are still without power.

He made the decision to reopen schools that have power not only in the interest of restoring learning, but also in consideration of the students and families CMSD serves.

"We anticipate that, in light of the circumstances, many families will be grateful that we are open and able to provide a safe, caring place for their children as parents return to work," said Gordon.

"By opening the majority of our schools, even as we restore power in 23 of our facilities, our families remain in charge of their own decisions and can choose to keep their children home or send them to school as best meets their needs and circumstances."

Lorain County: Basement flooding remains a concern

In many Lorain County neighborhoods, basement flooding remains a serious concern.

While the worst of Superstorm Sandy happened Monday in Northeast Ohio, plenty of people are still feeling the effects, especially those without power.

In Lorain County, basement flooding reports have come in from Avon Lake and Sheffield Lake to the city of Lorain. On Baldwin Boulevard in Lorain, trees toppled powerlines Monday evening.

With no electricity, the sump pumps in homes are not working. Sump pumps remove water that seeps into foundations below ground level during heavy rain conditions.

After five days of non-stop rain, the ground is saturated. Margaret Kocsis woke up Tuesday morning with no heat and power, and her basement floor under four inches of water.

The 90-year-old called her daughter in Painesville. Denise and Jim Fodor arrived in Lorain as soon as possible and, after searching several stores, were able to track down a generator for Margaret's home.

Within two hours, the basement waterline had noticeably receded.

Lorain County emergency management officials say power restoration crews are working around the clock cleaning up from Sandy and getting everyone back on line.

Tom Kelley says they're prioritizing critical facilities first: area nursing homes and a dialysis center that are without power, all the while tackling residential neighborhoods.

There is no estimation on when power will be fully restored.

Lorain: Ohioans stock up for Sandy

Written By kolimtiga on Senin, 29 Oktober 2012 | 17.04

LORAIN -- It is only a matter a time before Northeast Ohio begins feeling the effects of Sandy.

Many people spent the day getting ready for the worst. Among the items people were hoping to get their hands on were generators.

Several local hardware and supply stores say they've sold out completely over the past few days.

Caleb Johnson was able to get his hands on the last one at the Lorain Home Depot after calling a half dozen other stores in the area, but that wasn't all he picked up.

"Flashlights, batteries, getting ready just in case," said Johnson.

Shoppers were also stocking up at grocery stores. We caught up with Antonette Bedient as she finished her shopping.

"We're taking heed to what's coming and hopefully everyone else is too," said Bedient.

She says she and her family are ready to ride out the storm.

"We got extra blankets out. We're making a lot of soup... we're out today, going to bunker down the next couple days," Bedient said.

Lorain County Emergency Management Agency Director Tom Kelley says a plan has already been put into place. There are more than 200 shelter locations throughout the area and a dozen of them would be powered by generators.

Flooding and power outages are expected. Kelley says we could even see a storm surge on the south shore of the lake.

A storm surge "will raise the lake a couple feet... we could possibly have 20-foot waves," said Kelley.

Kelley recommends each home have a battery-powered radio in case communications go down.

If you find yourself in need of assistance during the storm, you can dial 2-1-1.

Emergencies declared, coastal residents warned as storm nears

Written By kolimtiga on Minggu, 28 Oktober 2012 | 17.04

Written by
Associated Press

With a fearsome superstorm threatening the Eastern Seaboard, several governors are declaring states of emergency and urging coastal residents to move inland.

Among them is New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie. He's ordered the evacuations of all Atlantic City casinos and the state's barrier islands by tomorrow afternoon. He's also closing state parks.

North Carolina Gov. Beverly Purdue has declared a state of emergency for some coastal areas. There's concern that a temporary bridge built after Hurricane Irene last year could be washed out again, cutting off Hatteras Island.

New York City is considering whether to shut down any of its public transportation, as it did during Irene.

Airlines are predicting cancellations and waiving change fees for passengers who want to reschedule.

The danger is not just from Hurricane Sandy, which is expected to come ashore early Tuesday somewhere around Delaware. As it moves inland, forecasters say Sandy will run into two winter weather systems, potentially creating one huge storm. An 800-mile wide swath of the country could see 50 mph winds.

Torrential rains are also predicted, and in some places, snow.

Emergencies declared, coastal residents warned as storm nears

Written by
Associated Press

Recap: Final Brown-Mandel debate

Written By kolimtiga on Jumat, 26 Oktober 2012 | 17.04

Written by
WKYC Web Staff

Written by
Associated Press

CINCINNATI -- Sen. Sherrod Brown and Republican challenger Josh Mandel debated for the third and final time Thursday night in Cincinnati.

Last week's debate in Columbus saw Mandel call Brown a liar and Brown describing Mandel as someone who could not be trusted. It's one of the costliest and most watched races in the country.

Here's a recap of  the final debate.

The last debate in Ohio's heated U.S. Senate race had the Democratic incumbent saying he will keep fighting for the middle class while the GOP challenger says Washington is broken and needs change.

Sen. Sherrod Brown and Ohio treasurer Josh Mandel debated live on NBC affiliates across Ohio.

Brown said Thursday night he had promised to work for the middle class and has done so with such actions as supporting the auto industry bailout.

Mandel has said he opposed the bailout; he says Brown is an example of why Washington isn't working.

In Columbus last week, Mandel looked into the camera and flatly called Brown "a liar," responding to a Brown campaign theme that Mandel can't be trusted.

Brown said that was "a pretty remarkable thing" for Mandel to say, calling the Republican the winner of "pants on fire" ratings in the fact-checking column of The Plain Dealer newspaper.

Mandel has depicted the 59-year-old veteran Democrat as a career Washington politician who uses "Washingtonspeak," while Brown has described his 35-year-old challenger as opportunistic and more concerned about his next office than doing the job he has.

They have split on the auto industry bailout backed by President Barack Obama's administration. Brown supported it and says it has saved thousands of Ohio jobs in auto-making plants and auto-related businesses.

Mandel said recently he opposed the bailout as unfair and fiscally irresponsible. The Obama campaign has been hammering Republican challenger Mitt Romney on the auto issue this week, in advertising and during rallies in Ohio. The state is considered pivotal in the presidential race, and also draws strong interest for the Senate race.

Republicans identified Brown, who unseated Mike DeWine in the 2006 election, as an early target in their bid to win control of the Senate, but polls have indicated Brown has been able to hang onto the lead in their race. It has drawn heavy outside ad spending on top of the some $30 million in spending by the two campaigns combined.

Mandel is a Marine veteran of Iraq who was a Cleveland-area city councilman and state legislator before being elected state treasurer two years ago.

Brown is a former Ohio secretary of state and state legislator elected to the U.S. House in 1992. Brown has championed the Obama health care overhaul, which Mandel calls "government-run health care" that he opposes. Brown supports abortion rights and gay marriage, both also opposed by Mandel.

Brown and Mandel have focused on their differences on issues from abortion to the auto industry bailout in the last debate of Ohio's heated race.

Brwn describes himself as a fighter for the middle class and steadfast supporter of women's choice on abortion.

Mandel says he would help economic growth with lower taxes and seek "common ground" on the divisive issue of abortion. He says he opposes abortion except to save a woman's life.

Their exchanges Thursday night weren't as vitriolic as their second debate last week, although peppered with sarcasm.

Mandel gave a somewhat conciliatory closing, praising Brown's wife and his own.

Brown thanked him in their debate televised around the state on NBC affiliates.

Hundreds of raucous supporters on both sides waved signs and chanted outside.

Cleveland Weather: Sandy concerns

Some portions of northern Ohio kissed record highs, while others were left just short.

Cleveland-Hopkins topped out at 79. Record: 80 (1963)

Akron-Canton topped out at 79, which ties the old record set it 1963.

Mansfield-Lahm was 2 shy of tying the record of 79, set in 1963.

New Philadelphia broke the record high with an 81 reading.  Old record was 80 set in 1991.

So, unfortunately we now have to say goodbye to the unusually warm temperatures.

A strong cold front will sweep through tomorrow, dropping our temperatures and bringing rain chances into the area.

We'll start the day in the upper 50s (after a midnight high in the low/mid 60s) and find temperatures falling into the low/mid 50s for the afternoon and evening.  The rain will be moving in from the west through the morning into the early afternoon, and scattered rain chances will persist through the evening.

The front then stalls to the east of us and rain will persist through Saturday.  Temps will be cool...only near 50 for highs.

Now, as exciting as all of that is ... we still haven't mentioned Sandy.

Sandy is a hurricane that is currently battering the Bahamas, but the storm will continue on a northerly path through the weekend.  At some point late this weekend or early next week, the storm is forecast to take a left turn into the East Coast (today's coastal choice is New Jersey...it has been shifting with each update).

What happens after that is anybody's guess.

Here is what WE need to be prepared for next week:

Wind - Very high wind potential for Sunday through Wednesday

Rain - Heavy rain chances for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday

Rain/snow mix - We will likely have some snow mixing in at times

The big key here is how far west Sandy will come.  If the storm moves toward us, it will bring with it a bubble of warm air that will keep the precip as rain (no snow mixing).

If that storm goes farther east, more cold air will be pulled our way and we'll end up with more of a rain/snow mix or just snow.

We will likely have VERY different outcomes for those west of I-71 as opposed to those farther east.

Only time will tell what exactly will happen, but you can bet we'll be watching!

Keep up to date with the latest forecast--- as we do expect potential changes heading into early next week as a result of Hurricane Sandy.

Tonight:  Clouds increase and thicken.  Mild.  Upper 50s/near 60

Tomorrow:  Mainly cloudy with rain moving in.  Morning temps in the upper 50s/low 60s falling into the low/mid 50s for the afternoon.

Saturday:  Rain likely.  Cool and breezy.  Near 50

Sunday:  Mainly cloudy with scattered rain, especially east.  Windy.  Upper 40s

Monday:  Rain likely.  Some rain/snow mix possible.  VERY WINDY.  Mid/upper 40s

Tuesday:  Rain likely with some rain/snow mix possible.  VERY WINDY.  Low/mid 40s

Wednesday:  Rain likely.  Windy.  Mid 40s

Thursday:  Mainly cloudy with scattered rain.  Upper 40s

Again, PLEASE stay up on the latest forecasts and stay Weather Ready.

Cleveland Weather: An "interesting" ride

It is going to be a very interesting week.

First, we reach for records tomorrow as the sun shines and the heat surges our way.  Highs will push into the upper 70s and low 80s.  The current record for tomorrow at Hopkins stands at 80 (set in 1963), and I have a very conservative 80 on my forecast for tomorrow.

A strong cold front will plow through Friday bringing a drop in temperatures, showers and blustery wind.  We'll start the day partly sunny with morning-highs in the 60s and fall back into the 50s for much of the day with the rain catching up to us.

Then all eyes keep close track of Hurricane Sandy.  Yes, Hurricane Sandy waaaaay down in the Caribbean (the one hitting Jamaica today).  The storm is expected to cross Cuba and move offshore of Florida's east coast this weekend.

Then what happens after that will be the driver for our forecast for Monday and beyond.

IF the storm hooks a right and heads out to sea in the Atlantic, all of the collective eastern US will breathe a sigh of relief because any impacts will be minor, at best.

But, if the current forecast models are correct, we could be watching the birth of an historic storm for the eastern seaboard that will bring Northern Ohio some weather drama... such as wind, rain and snow.  The direct effects would start here Sunday with a shift of the wind and Sandy would be the center of our forecast for the entire week as the storm sits over New England.

Believe me when I say that there are a LOT of eyes watching this.  Every model update with new information is dissected for information that will help to improve the forecast.

There will be MANY changes in the timing, the numbers and the intensity of any effects Sandy will have here.  It will be VERY important to keep an eye on the forecast as the track of Sandy is adjusted and the forecasts are honed.

Stay safe...stay Weather Ready.

-Betsy (always cranking out updates on Twitter  @BetsyKling)

THIS forecast is based on Current data and forecasts for Hurricane Sandy. Big swings in forecast temperatures and conditions are possible in the coming days.

Thursday: Mostly sunny and very warm.  Record heat potential! Upper 70s/low 80s

Friday: Early sun peeks, then increasing clouds with chances for rain and thunder storms late morning into the afternoon.  Breezy.  Mid/upper 60s early, falling into the 50s for the afternoon.

Saturday: Rain likely. Cooler.  Low/mid 50s

Sunday: Mostly cloudy. Scattered showers...especially east.  Cool. Upper 40s

Monday:  Mostly cloudy with rain...especially east. Rain may mix with snow at times. WINDY!  Upper 40s

Tuesday:  Rain likely mixing with snow at times.  Some areas in the higher terrain east of Cleveland and toward the PA state line could have all snow.  WINDY.  Low 40s

Wednesday: Rain likely.  WINDY.  Mid 40s

...as the timing looks now, the storms's impact (wind and rain) would linger through Friday before finally winding down.

Cleveland: Teen shot outside Cory Rec Center

WKYC Web Staff

CLEVELAND -- A teenager was shot in the hip outside of the Cory Recreation Center in Cleveland Tuesday night.

The shooting was reported just before 6:30 p.m. near E. 105th Street and Grantwood Avenue.

The victim, a 17-year-old boy, was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center. There is no update on his condition.

Police say the victim was arguing with several other young men inside the rec center. An off duty police officer working at the facility ordered the group to leave.

As the group was walking south on E. 105th, they were approached by three males on bicycles. The bike riders pulled out handguns and fired multiple shots at the group as they were walking.

Aside from the gunshot wound, the only other injury reported was another young man with a scraped knee.

It is not clear if the bike riders were involved in the argument from earlier, police said.

Police found multiple shell casings in the area.

Anyone with any information is asked to call the Fifth District Detective Bureau at (216) 623-5518.

Chagrin Falls: Annual pumpkin roll 'rolled' on Tuesday

CHAGRIN FALLS, Ohio -- Juniors and seniors from Chagrin Falls High School held their traditional pumpkin roll just after midnight Tuesday.

About 240 rollers marched in unison up Main Street and climbed Main Street's Grove Hill, most toting plastic sleds and snow saucers, ready for the ride of their high school lives.

For the past 40-plus years, the CFHS juniors and seniors steal pumpkins throughout the Chagrin Valley in late September and through October.

They are then stashed away in garages and barns until the night of the roll.

Police from Chagrin Falls, Moreland Hills, South Russell and Bentleyville were ready for them this year, having coordinated the annual roll with students for safety reasons.

Barricades were set up at the bottom and top of Grove Hill, as well as the side streets along the hill and Summit Street.

A person only described by police as "an adult" brought two truckloads of purloined pumpkins up the hill around 11 p.m., dumping them at the summit.

On the third trip, the truck was followed minutes later by the students. They were quick to start tossing and smashing pumpkins on the hill. That's to create the slippery goo of pumpkin innards and pumpkin seeds to slide down the hill.

The light rain that fell just before midnight helped make the roadway a bit slick to begin with.

The roll was still going strong at 1:30 a.m.

Police tell WKYC that they made a few arrests of students for underage consumption of alcohol. No alcohol containers were seen at the roll but the smell of alcohol was detectable among a few of the students, despite the almost overpowering smell of "pumpkin."

The Chagrin Falls Fire Department was also called for two girls, one who was injured sliding down the hill and another who apparently passed out from drinking.

Police also said they will cite the truck's driver for "dumping debris on the roadway," a citation that has always been issued for whomever drives the trucks or SUVs that bring pumpkins to the roll.

Once the roll ends, the village's service department will bring out a front-end loader to scrape the debris from the roadway. Rogue pumpkins that managed to roll all the way down the hill past Orange Street will be gathered up by hand.

Once all the pumpkin mess has been loaded into a dump truck, the hill will be hosed down and reopened. Police will determine the cost of having the service department clean up the mess and then bill the truck driver who delivered the pumpkins.

A collection is usually taken up among the students and given to the driver to pay the bill.

And know that it's not unusual to see one or two pumpkins left behind in a nook or cranny when the sun rises the morning after.

Investigator: Million-dollar plumber raises audit red flag

Written By kolimtiga on Selasa, 23 Oktober 2012 | 17.04

CLEVELAND -- Did taxpayers get hustled when they paid a plumber nearly a million dollars?  And why hasn't Cleveland City Council tried to figure out what went wrong with an original contract that changed five times without council approval?

Terry the Plumber, better known as Terry Kordiac, told the Investigator Tom Meyer he did not do anything wrong.  "If anything, they (City Hall) owe me. I don't owe them," said Kordiac.

Cleveland City Council has yet to hold hearings on a scathing city audit that was released in June. Several members of the public utilities committee have failed to read the audit.

Councilman Brian Cummins says it's inexcusable.

"What is council doing to really pay attention to these audit findings? This should really raise a red flag," said Cummins.

Among other things, the audit blasts Cleveland Public Power or CPP, of failing to check on the work done by Terry the Plumber and to see if it was done right.

But Terry the Plumber told the Investigator that CPP's top leadership, including commissioner Ivan Henderson,  knew exactly what he was doing and, in some cases, even examined his work.

"I don't think the right hand knows what the left hand is doing," said Kordiac.

Barry Withers, the Director of Public Utilities, refused to answer questions. The Investigator asked Withers if Terry the Plumber did the work the city paid him to do. Withers wished the Investigator a "good morning" and walked away.

One of the members of council's public utilities committee was surprised to learn of the audit findings, four months after Mayor Jackson's office emailed all members of council copies of the audit.

When the Investigator told Councilman Kevin Conwelll about the contents of the audit, Conwell said "oh, that's not good when you tell me something like that."

Councilman Polensek said top management at CPP should be held responsible for the Terry the Plumber contract, which ballooned from $160,000 to $980,000.

But Mayor Jackson failed to discipline the commissioner or his assistants. Instead, CPP slapped an unidentified employee on the wrist, simply reassigning him to other duties.

When city contracts exceed $50,000, council must approve them to insure they're not handed out to family and friends. Auditors say that didn't happen in the case of work done by Terry the Plumber.

The city's law department is conducting an internal investigation, and there could be disciplinary action taken as a result of that probe.

Fact Check: Missteps in Monday's debate

Written by
Associated Press

WASHINGTON -- Voters didn't always get the straight goods when President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney made their case for foreign policy and national security leadership Monday night before their last super-sized audience of the campaign.

A few of their detours into domestic issues were problematic too.

A look at some of their statements and how they compare with the facts:

ROMNEY on Syria: "What I'm afraid of is we've watched over the past year or so, first the president saying, 'Well, we'll let the U.N. deal with it.' And Assad - excuse me, Kofi Annan - came in and said we're going to try to have a cease-fire. That didn't work. Then it went to the Russians and said, 'Let's see if you can do something.' We should be playing the leadership role there." OBAMA: "We are playing the leadership role."

THE FACTS: Under Obama, the United States has taken a lead in trying to organize Syria's splintered opposition, even if the U.S. isn't interested in military intervention or providing direct arms support to the rebels. The administration has organized dozens of meetings in Turkey and the Middle East aimed at rallying Syria's political groups and rebel formations to agree on a common vision for a democratic future after Syrian President Bashar Assad is defeated. And Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton brought dozens of nations together as part of the Friends of Syria group to combine aid efforts to Syria's opposition and help it win the support of as many as Syrians as possible. The U.S. also is involved in vetting recipients of military aid from America's Arab allies like Saudi Arabia and Qatar. Romney is partly right in pointing out Obama's failure to win U.N. support for international action in Syria. But the Friends of Syria group has helped bring in hundreds of millions of dollars in humanitarian aid and other forms of assistance to Syrian civilians and the political opposition. In trying to describe the strategic importance of seeing Assad defeated, Romney stumbled in saying Syria was Iran's "route to the sea." Iran has a large southern coastline with access to the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. It has no land border with Syria.

ROMNEY: Said that when he was Massachusetts governor, high-school students who graduated in the top quarter "got a four-year, tuition-free ride at any Massachusetts public institution of higher learning."

OBAMA: "That happened before you came into office." ROMNEY: "That was actually mine, actually, Mr. President. You got that fact wrong."

THE FACTS: Romney was right. The John and Abigail Adams scholarship program began in 2004 when he was governor.

ROMNEY: "In the 2000 debates, there was no mention of terrorism."

THE FACTS: There was passing mention of terrorism in the 2000 debates. In the Oct. 17, 2000, debate between Democrat Al Gore and Republican George W. Bush, Gore talked about his work in Congress to "deal with the problems of terrorism and these new weapons of mass destruction." And in the vice presidential debate, Democrat Joe Lieberman defended the Clinton administration's record of preparing the armed forces to "meet the threats of the new generation of tomorrow, of weapons of mass destruction, of ballistic missiles, terrorism, cyber warfare." Romney's larger point, that the U.S. did not anticipate anything on the scale of terrorist threat that existed, is supported by the light attention paid to the subject in the debates.

OBAMA: "What I would not have had done was left 10,000 troops in Iraq that would tie us down. And that certainly would not help us in the Middle East."

THE FACTS: Obama was suggesting that he had never favored keeping U.S. troops in Iraq beyond the December 2011 withdrawal deadline that the Bush administration had negotiated with the Iraqi government. Actually, the Obama administration tried for many months to win Iraqi agreement to keeping several thousand American troops there beyond 2011 to continue training and advising the Iraqi armed forces. The talks broke down over a disagreement on legal immunity for U.S. troops.

Canton: Student told to cut hair grown for Locks for Love

Written By kolimtiga on Senin, 22 Oktober 2012 | 17.04

CANTON, Ohio -- Canton South High School Junior Zachery Aufderheide is close to reaching a personal goal.

"If I could just give the chance for one kid to have a normal life, then I'm just going to go for it," Aufderheide said.

He's about an inch away from donating a healthy head of hair to Locks for Love. Locks for Love uses donated hair of a certain length to create hairpieces for disadvantaged kids struggling with hair loss.

The only thing standing in the way of Zach's goal to donate to the organization for a second time is the school's dress code.

The code maintains that students hair must be kept at a certain length.

Zach says three weeks into the new school year he was told he would have to cut it. He says he explained to staff and the Canton Local Schools' board back in September what he planned to do with the hair.

According to Aufderheide, they seemed sympathetic, but later decided to uphold the dress code requiring him to cut his hair or face disciplinary action.

Zach's mom Robin says her son has a 3.5 grade point average.  She was hoping the board would make a special exception, just this once.

"It does hurt because he believes in this. He's not hurting anybody. He's trying to help somebody," said Robin.

She says she'll stand behind her son, who has no plans to cut his hair.

"I can understand where they're coming from. They've had this dress code policy for so long, but I don't understand why they can't make one simple exception this one time," Zach said.

School officials have not yet responded to requests for comment.

Ways 2 Save: $20 Nestle chocolate fountains

CLEVELAND -- Hello Chocolate.

You know you want it!

I was going to write a long article about how today's Ways 2 Save deal is perfect for kids, but I think this one is as just as much for adults. In fact, when I reached out via Twitter to find a parent who could bring a kid in to test today's product, adult testers requests outnumbered the kids 10-2.

So today, for $25 (that's the total with shipping) you can make your chocolate dreams come true.

The Nesquik Chocolate Fondue Fountain from Nestle is a lot of fun. The three-tiered fondue fountain is a fantastic party favor or a way to entertain on a dime. The easy-to-clean stainless steel bowl at the base of the fountain caught the chocolate runoff as promised and there are separate switches to control the heat and motor.

Today at 50% off... I'm sold!

The instruction manual comes with recipes for classic chocolate fondue, peanut butter chocolate fondue and chocolate orange fondue.
