Neighborhood mourns victims of Bedford crash

Written By kolimtiga on Minggu, 31 Maret 2013 | 17.04

MAPLE HEIGHTS -- Sorrow hangs over Watson Road in Maple Heights Saturday night as a street that acted like a family is mourning the loss of one of their own.

Neighbor Lana Johnson remembered hearing the news, "When I first found out I couldn't believe it, it was so hard. I thought it was a dream, I'm like it can't be real. It's crazy, it hurts so bad...it can't be real. I wish they were still here and I want them to know I love them and they're going to be missed dearly."

Neighbors are still trying to piece together their emotions after hearing that 30-year-old mother Maria Thorpe and two of her daughters were killed in crash in Bedford Friday night.

Maria, who was pregnant with her fifth child, was driving her four daughters back home from her mother's house when police say a 48-year-old Warrensville Heights man driving a pickup truck ran a red light and crashed into them.

Maria and two of her daughters, 8-year-old Zariah Roberts and 5-year-old Zyanah Roberts, died in the crash. Her 12-year-old daughter was released from the hospital and is staying with her aunt and her 10-year-old remains hospitalized in critical condition.

"They say she's moving her little fingers and she's okay, for now. Words can't even describe what they're going through right now and they're going to be missed," said heartbroken neighbor Alana Johnson.

Before the crash, Maria Thorpe was studying for her high school diploma and picking out baby names that begin with the letter Z.

Neighbors remember her as family, the lady that welcomed everyone to her pool parties and loved her children more than life itself.

The driver of the other vehicle was taken to an area hospital and then was taken into police custody after being treated. No charges have been filed, but they believe that alcohol may have been a factor.

Lake County: Painesville man killed in crash Saturday

CONCORD TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- A 33-year-old Painesville man was killed in a crash on his motorcycle near the Lake County-Geauga County line Saturday.

Paul Widdowson was driving his motorcycle north on State Route 608, just north of the Geauga County line, when he crossed into the oncoming lane, hitting a car head-on.

Widdowson died at the scene, highway patrol said. He was wearing his helmet at the time of the crash.

The driver of the car, Erica Hebrock, 19, of Montville, and her passenger were not injured in the crash. Hebrock was not wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Speed is likely the leading factor in the crash, investigators said.

Strongsville strike: At what cost?

Written By kolimtiga on Jumat, 29 Maret 2013 | 17.04

STRONGSVILLE -- Striking teachers in Strongsville going on the offensive over what they claim is the real cost of the strike.

The teachers have been walking the picket lines for the past four weeks. Talks between the two sides broke down Tuesday after nearly 12 hours of negotiations.

The teachers union released new numbers today that they say comes from a public records request. They say the numbers show what the district is paying Huffmaster, the company providing the replacement subs and security for the district.

The numbers show over $338,000 for security officers, over $75,000 for several videographers to document striking teachers, $90,000 for van drivers to provide transportation to replacement subs, $183,000 for lodging for subs, $25,000 to pay gas, mileage, and tolls for replacements.

And payroll costs of over a half million dollars.

For a total price tag of $1.8 million.

The union also claims they have documentation that substitute teachers are being flown in from all over the country, costing the district another $50,000 in airline fees.

The union says the money is only part of the picture.

WKYC reached out to the district for a response and reaction to the claims but they have not returned our calls.

Top Easter Toy Deal: $24 R/C helicopters

CLEVELAND -- I call this the deal to bring out the kid in everyone. I've received countless requests since Christmas and Chanukah for remote control helicopters and today, the savings soar.

The Syma helicopters are my absolute favorite. They charge via USB cable, soar EXTREMELY high and only need about 20 minutes to charge.

The only thing not included for takeoff are 6 AA batteries needed in the remote control. Today you have your choice of blue or yellow and the sellout factor is very high.

At the time this article was written, Amazon was selling the exact same model for about a dollar more with shipping, but I will caution you: They have been adjusting prices throughout the night and in most cases are using resellers rather than having the items come directly through Amazon. You also don't have your choice of colors at Amazon (or at least not at the time this article was written).

On today's deal website, you'll also find my favorite iPhone 4/4S case deal for under $10. Just be aware today's deal site charges a shipping fee per order.

67% off Syma Mini R/C helicopter + choice of two colors

Was: $64.99 (with shipping)
Now: $23.99 (with shipping)

**Today's deal is best used in a large open space and is recommended for 14 years of age and older. The helicopter blades spin fast and you'll want to make sure these are flown away from faces and breakables.

Orders taken on Good Friday will not be shipped until next week. Please allow up to 10 days for delivery as this stock comes from California.

Akron: More than 1,200 without power after car hits pole

AKRON, Ohio -- More than 1,700 homes and businesses in Akron lost power early Thursday morning after a car crashed into a pole on Clifton Avenue.

The crash was reported around 2:50 a.m. at the intersection of Clifton Avenue and East Cuyahoga Falls Avenue. Police said the woman driving the car may crashed due to a medical emergency.

The crash victim is a diabetic. She is in stable condition and was speaking with EMS crews before being taken to a nearby hospital. The extent of her injuries are not known.

The pole was damaged and wires were strewn across the roadway, reports said.

Moments later, reports of blown transformers began streaming in to Akron dispatchers. Emergency crews in Akron and Cuyahoga Falls both responded to calls for alarms at area businesses, as far away as Chapel Hill Mall.

FirstEnergy outage maps reported more than 1,700 outages in the area, almost entirely in Akron, immediately following the crash. A call to a FirstEnergy spokesman was not immediately returned.

That number dropped to 615 just after 4 a.m., but rose back up to 1,230 within the hour.

East Cuyahoga Falls Avenue is closed from Riverside Drive to Clifton Avenue.

Officials have not confirmed a direct connection between the crash and the power outages at this time.

Cleveland Weather: Patiently waiting

It seems the cold will never end.

Today (thanks to some sunshine) we did indeed make it into the low 40s, but that is still well below average for this time of year.

Our patience is wearing thin.

By the weekend some warmer air will push into the area, but at the same time a cold front will be sweeping in.  That means temperatures near average for Easter, but rain will be with us.

Tonight: Isolated snow showers.  Accumulations generally less than 1", but could be up to 3" in the heart of the snowbelt.  Otherwise just variable clouds. Upper 20s/low 30s

Thursday: Mostly cloudy with scattered rain and/or snow chances. Upper 30s/low 40s

Friday: Partly sunny. Low 40s

Saturday: Partly cloudy. Upper 40s/near 50

Summit County: Man arrested for impersonating police officer

SUMMIT COUNTY -- Summit County Sheriff's Deputies arrested a Springfield Township man Monday for repeatedly impersonating a police officer and driving a car with police decals.

Here's how it all unraveled.

On March 11, Summit County Deputies say an automobile repair shop reported that a customer asked a mechanic if he would be able to install police lights on his vehicle.

The vehicle was a white Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor with "K9" stickers on the rear and both sides of the vehicle.

The mechanic described the contents of the vehicle as a bag labeled, "POLICE," handcuffs, and a police baton.

The driver was wearing a vest that said, "POLICE" and he had a badge on his belt. He told the mechanic he was a police officer.

On March 15, the Crown Victoria was seen in the City of Green Giant Eagle parking lot located. The inside of the vehicle contained emergency flashing lights, an emergency siren, dash camera, and what appeared to be police radios.

The license plates on the vehicle were expired. Area shoppers told police they were concerned that the driver may have been impersonating a police officer.

On March 25, the driver of the white Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor was arrested for impersonating a police officer by the Summit County Sheriff's Office.

He was identified as Sean P. Duffy, 48, of Springfield Township and he is also known as John Kidd.

The investigation revealed that Duffy has never had formal police training and has never been employed as a law enforcement officer in the state of Ohio.

Duffy was in possession of numerous items used by law enforcement personnel. Duffy had been pulled over at least four times in the previous week and, on one occasion, he stated he was a retired Sheriff's Deputy and on another occasion, he claimed to be a retired Canton police officer.

If anyone has information regarding these incidents or has had contact with Sean Duffy where he has portrayed himself as a law enforcement officer, please contact the Summit County Sheriff's Office 330-643-2147.

Cleveland Councilman Reed apologizes for drunk driving arrest

CLEVELAND -- For the first time since his drunk driving arrest, Cleveland City Councilman Zack Reed faced a crowd of his constituents Tuesday.

"I want to apologize to each and every one of you," Reed told the crowd.

Reed made the statement during his State of the Ward speech at an east side church.

Along with the apology, Reed called the video of his arrest earlier this month inaccurate. Some of his constituents disagreed.

"The fact that he didn't pass those tests; well if it were me? Where would I be?" asked Ward 2 resident Tiah Herd.

"It was heartfelt and I appreciate that he took the time to say I'm sorry," another resident said.

Reed's arrest was his third for operating a vehicle while intoxicated. He pleaded not guilty and will be back in court April 12.

Mediation lasts 11 hours, still no deal in Strongsville

INDEPENDENCE -- Both sides in the Strongsville teachers strike remained at the negotiating table for nearly 12 hours Tuesday but left without a deal in the late evening hours.

Just after 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, the district and teachers union began meeting with a federal mediator.

Teachers have been on strike since March 4 and replacement teachers have been in the classrooms.

Governor John Kasich has even offered to step in to try and help bring an end to the strike.

Mother, nurse dies from stab wounds in downtown attack

CLEVELAND -- Police and homicide detectives are investigating the death of a nurse found in downtown Cleveland bleeding and calling for help.

She has been identified as Aliza Sherman, 53, of Beachwood. Police received a call around 4:30 p.m. Sunday for a woman screaming at 75 Erieview Plaza behind the Galleria.

When they arrived, police found Sherman covered in blood. EMS took her to MetroHealth Medical Center where she later died. Police say she still had her purse and it was unclear if anything else was taken.

The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner said Sherman died from multiple stab wounds. While her friends and coworkers wonder what happened, they're remembering her warmth.

"I don't think there was a more gentle kinder person than Aliza," said Dr. James Goldfarb, the director of IVF and fertility at University Hospitals.  He worked with Sherman at the Cleveland Clinic, where she was the head invitro fertilization nurse. Goldfarb says she offered compassion to her patients a stressful time.

Now her coworkers, who know the effort it takes to create one life, struggle with how quickly one can be taken away.

"She just was a very gentle person, who would never hurt anybody. I think it makes it that much more difficult to see what happened to her," said Goldfarb.

The Clinic released the following statement: "We are saddened by the tragic death of our long-time employee, Aliza, who was an invitro fertilization nurse. She has touched many lives and will always be remembered for her warmth and kindness. Our thoughts are with her family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time."

Police found Sherman outside Erieview Plaza, just steps from Stafford & Stafford, LPA, her attorney's office. Channel 3 tried to contact her attorney Gregory Moore several times with no response.

Aliza and her husband Sanford Sherman were due in court Tuesday March 26 for a contested divorce trial. "We all know she was having some issues, you know, martial issues at this point. That's been going on for a long time," said Goldfarb. "She was, as anybody else would be very upset about that. Those things were never easy."

A family friend at the couple's home in Beachwood told us her estranged husband and four grown children are asking for privacy.

Judge Diane Palos with Cuyahoga County Domestic Relations court said the divorce filings began in June 2011.  While the docket shows many discovery issues related to the couple's finances, Palos said there are no physical safety issues mentioned.

Meanwhile Cleveland police are talking to witnesses, and hoping surveillance video maybe able to tell the story.  Dave Clark, General Manager at the Galleria, says the complex has 50 cameras. Any information they can provide will be given to police.

Clark said they are doing everything they can to ensure the safety of tenants and their guests.  Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Cleveland Police Homicide Unit at 216-623-5464.

App and website help combat robocalls

Written By kolimtiga on Senin, 25 Maret 2013 | 17.04

Photo Courtesty: USA Today

CLEVELAND -- There are few things I hate as much as robocalls. They're annoying, they're a burden and in many cases, they're illegal.

Unfortunately, for this problem, there's no quick fix. In fact, the FTC is offering $50,000 in cash for any company or individual able to create a solution to block illegal robocalls.

If that doesn't sound desperate (or creative), I certainly don't expect a quick fix in the immediate future. Until a solution arrives, many of you have asked for assistance and here's what I do:

I never answer a call from a number I don't recognize on caller ID and then I follow up on that with an app:

My favorite recent app is "Robocall Lookup Tool."

Right now, this is solely an iPhone app, but it allows you to submit a robocall number to a database and gives the caller an opportunity to screen the numbers from missed calls. The app also predicts whether that strange number on your caller ID is a robocaller. Its probability meter is excellent and this free resource is your best defense at the moment.

My other favorite resource is a free website that does the same thing as the app I just mentioned. "800 Notes" [http://800notes.com/] is not exactly the most beautiful website I've ever seen, but it allows you to find out who's calling you and why. 800notes.com also reports telemarketing calls you receive to the national Do Not Call List, reports fraud and gives you a way to check out a business. Just type in the number of the person/company calling you and you'll be able to cross-check those digits against a massive database. 800Notes.com is also a way to stay on top of phone scams and this community-driven forum is the best one I've used online.

App and website help combat robocalls

Strongsville: Neighbors divided over striking tactics

Written By kolimtiga on Sabtu, 23 Maret 2013 | 17.04

STRONGSVILLE -- As the teacher's strike wraps up a third week of protests, some parents are not happy with the striking tactics.

The protestors have picketed outside the homes of the school board members, as well as their private places of business in neighboring towns.

"In my view, it's total harassment," said Michelle Soltis, a parent of a middle school student.

Becky Wing, who has two children in the school district, does not believe the picketing outside the homes will achieve what the teachers want.

"People will see that and say, 'Why would I want to pay them more, when they're acting like this?" Wing said.

Strongsville Education Association -- the teacher's union -- President Tracy Linscott says the protestors are following police guidelines when in the neighborhoods and are not making noise.

"They're walking and making the board aware that the teachers think about this 24/7," Linscott said.

Many green and white signs are popping up in lawns throughout the community with words that read: We Support Strongsville Teachers.

Judy Giblin has a sign staked in her front yard.

Giblin is a retired Strongsville first grade teacher with 21 years experience.

"It breaks my heart because I know that most of the teachers would rather be teaching than out picketing. I think that when they voted to strike, they had no idea it would last this long," Giblin said.

She says she knows many people in the community are unhappy with the teachers for striking.

"I tell them that the teachers have legitimate reasons to be on strike, and it could be settled if the other side would actually negotiate. I know they can tweak something to make it satisfactory," Giblin said.

On Friday, the union said it has come up with a counterproposal, with more concessions to the school board.

The board president told Channel 3 he is anxious to see the proposal.

On Friday, the school board also filed a charge of unfair labor practice against the teachers' union, for picketing the homes and places of employment of the board members.

A Cleveland attorney tells Channel 3 the protestors are within their first amendment right to picket from the sidewalks.

For the charge to stick, the board would have to prove that the union is inducing or encouraging its members to picket at the homes, which, the attorney says, will be tough to prove.

Flash in East Coast sky has social media buzzing

WASHINGTON - Social media sites are buzzing with reports of a flash of light streaking across the sky along the East Coast.

Bill Cooke of NASA's Meteoroid Environmental Office said Friday night that the flash appears to be "a single meteor event." He said it "looks to be a fireball that moved roughly toward the southeast, going on visual reports."

He likened it to a boulder entering the Earth's atmosphere over the northeastern U.S.

He noted that the meteor was widely seen, with more than 350 reports on the website of the American Meteor Society alone.

Derrick Pitts, chief astronomer at Philadelphia's Franklin Institute, agreed that the sightings had all the hallmarks of a "fireball."

Pitts said this one caught more eyes because it happened on a Friday evening - and because Twitter has provided a way for people to share information on sightings.

Investigator: City employee faces sex charges

CLEVELAND -- A grand jury has charged a Cleveland employee with the kidnapping, attempted rape and gross sexual imposition in connection with two women he was trying to help get back on track.

James E. Box, a well-known community activist with a criminal past whom the city hired in 1999, has been suspended without pay from his $46,000-a-year job as a project director in Cleveland's Community Relations Department. Box had been on administrative duty since the allegations of inappropriate sexual contact first arose early last year.

Box is accused of attacking two women in the fall of 2011, according to the indictment handed up the grand jury.  One of the alleged assaults occurred in Cleveland while the second reportedly happened in Shaker Heights.

Box was not immediately available for comment.

Cleveland Police first learned of the allegations on January 10, 2012, when a Probation Department supervisor contacted the sex crimes unit.

But Cleveland Police did not contact Shaker Heights about the incident there until March 9, 2012, said Shaker Heights Police Chief Scott Lee.

That call was placed three days after the Investigator Tom Meyer first asked Cleveland Police about the allegations against Box.

Box was mentoring the women in his role as an instructor with Amer-I-Can, an at-risk youth program, that is run by former Cleveland Brown running back Jim Brown, according the police reports.

The two women were undergoing the counseling with Amer-I-Can as a condition of their enrollment in Cleveland Municipal Court's "Get on Track" program. Get on Track is supposed to help low-level offenders turn their lives around and get a high school diploma.

The first incident happened in August 2011 after Box went to the woman's apartment to help fix her car, according to a Cleveland Police report.

After being invited into her home for a drink, Box grabbed the woman and pushed her against a wall, the report said. The woman resisted as Box talked about having sex.

"Box then unzipped his pants and exposed his penis," the detective noted in the report. "(The woman) told him to leave and he did."

City Prosecutor Victor Perez determined there was insufficient evidence to charge Box with a felony following an investigation by Cleveland Police's sex crimes unit, a police report said. He later recommended Box be charged with a misdemeanor  for exposing himself to the woman.

Box is charged with kidnapping, attempted rape and attempted sexual battery in connection with the incident, according to court papers.

The second incident happened in October 2011, according to a statement from by second woman, which was obtained by Channel 3 News.

The statement says that Box offered the woman a ride home but made a detour to his office at Amer-I-Can on Lee Road in Shaker Heights. Box then took her into a room, started to kiss her and then engaged in sexual contact, the victim wrote.

When she asked Box to stop, the woman wrote, "He also offered me money for sex and offered to take me to a hotel."

Box is charged with kidnapping, attempted rape, attempted sexual batter, gross sexual imposition and soliciting in connection with the incident.

Box is scheduled to be arraigned on the charges on April 3 in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court.
